Took the car to this garage that my mate suggested. They previously did work on my mates car and all went really well. I took mine there to have the carbs refurbed and some body work.Initial quote was 1k. They kept the car in for 5 weeks and the inital bill was 3k and also telling me the car needs a lot of miles on to 'retune' the carbs back into shape. At this point i did not drive the car after i question how come the bill is so high, they reduced it to under 2k. As it was late, they gave me the car and im due to return on Monday to settle the bill, they will take payments aparently. Now, i drove the car, it runs worse than before. The carbs work is billed at 1k including parts and labour, setup hours, etc. Im furious at the moment, the car is missfiring and generally sounds like st.

Where do i stand? I dont wanna pay for the carbs work as i will need to take it somewherw else to be done properly. The other little jobs they did look spot on and really happy with that, tho they gave me the car w no fuel. Happy paying the 1k for body work but what should i do about the carbs refurb? I dont wanna take the car back to them as they already had it long enough, i very much doubt they will manage to fix it.

What they say about the carbs is that they were never cleaned / reconditioned thats why they couldnt get them to the as new state and couldnt get them setup properly. The car in question is a Westfield 1.6 xflow engine and the carbs are webbers 40.

I would see if you can find another specialist/knowledgable person to take it to tomorrow (I.E. Before you're due back there) to see what their opinion is on the matter

Just make sure you do it before you go there to pay. Once you've paid, you're fked I recon.

I'm not at all knowledgable on these matters, but if I was in that situation, that's what I would do. Maybe make phone calls tomorrow to arrange a 9:00am appointment on Monday?

You invite them to fix the problems at their cost. Advise if they don't fix it then you will take the car elsewhere and recover the costs in so doing from them. If they dispute there is a problem, then offer to have the vehicle independantly inspected with it being at their cost if there is a problem found, and your cost if not.

I'm not sure that giving them the car back to have another go is wise. At the moment you have the upper hand as you have the car, and haven't paid yet.

I would suggest you pay them for the work you are happy with, and tell them of the problems you have which you will have independently looked at. Depending on the outcome of that inspection you will pay up or dispute the charge accordingly.

Good suggestions guys, i.ll defo take the car somewhere else for another look before going back. The local kitcar community probably my best bet. Cheers for that.

If they couldn't recondition the carbs and set them up properly for £1k then I wouldn't be paying them a penny for the work on the carbs.
Also to say they need lots of miles on them for the carbs to be retuned into shape is their way of pulling the wool as they cocked the job up. Setting twin 40 dcoe carbs up isn't that hard and once done should be bang on straight away.

Couldn't you get a new pair of carbs for well below £1k?

£650 for brand new carbs cant see how they can justify a grand especially as it still dont run right.

chancers who dont have a clue. You'd have been best buying a weber book and doing them yourself!

More and more mechanics nowadays seem to know fk all about carbs, but in reality, they are pretty simple.

Thats what i told them about the price of the webers. They quoted me 450 quid originally for the refurb of the webers, no setup time tho. I thought it's a decent quote, bit high but yeah, they were highly recommended and they seemed to take good care of the cars there.

Now the price billed is 1k... Im not gonna pay that! No way!

Yes it is as someone is taking you for a ride

For 2 grand you could probably have throttle bodies

Ask jock7s if you haven't already

Sure did. To clarify cost of carbs work they want to bill me is just over 1k, the rest to 2k is the body work that im happy-ish to pay for.

I'd speak to them first and see what they propose before going off guns blazing.
