I know the Americans use a different rating system for fuel so you can't directly compare figures and say their 91 fuel is not as good as our 95. Question is how do the American fuels actually compare?

I ask as I have bought an aftermarket ECU loaded with an american map for a standard engine, so the engines identical in the USA to the UK, same power rating etc which makes me think the fuel is probably the same, but I want to be sure.

Nothing to add, but my grammar nazi hat is on and I can't help but comment that that's the worst use I've ever seen for an apostrophe.

Our 98 is comparable to their 93. They also have different blends, additives annd impurities so a jar of Exxon is still different to a jar of Esso even if it is the same octane.
Ok, so comparible but not. If importing a European car to the USA do people experience running issues due to these differences or vice versa?

In a word, "no".

Fuel variations between Europe and USA make no differenece whatsoever. In particular, any half-decent modern car will have electronics which adjust combustion to suit the fuel in the tank.
