Touring the Netherlands in August
Discussion
Sadly not in the Wedge (I fear it may be carnapped by Corno ;^) but I'll be bringing the family over to Holland next week. Any suggestions for places to visit most welcome.
We are going to Amsterdam first for a few days and will be coming past Alphen around the 25th in case there are any Tiv drivers up for a beer/meal.
So if you see a Jeep Cherokee with "My other car is a TVR" sticker in the back give us a wave!

If you fancy a bit of history. Just outside Amsterdam: http://www.muiderslot.nl/
After the castle tour, stop at the lock on the river Vecht. "Ome Ko" is a great pub with live music on Sundays and it's great watching the swearing of skippers to their crew as they try to negotiate the lock...
5km to the east is the small and nice town of Muiderberg (well I would say that, I was born there) where you could have a meal on the beach if the weather is nice. I took my UK and US friends there a couple of weeks ago and they loved it. http://www.zeemeeuw.net/
The handbuilt replica of the 1628 ship the Batavia, using the original blueprints and 17th century building techniques, is extremely impressive. http://www.bataviawerf.nl/
It's a 45 minute drive from Amsterdam. On the way back you could drive over the dyke that connects to West Friesland and have a meal in the charming old harbour town of Enkhuizen. On the same side of the lake (the IJsselmeer) are the old fishing villages of Marken, Volendam, Monninckendam and Durgerdam, which are worth a quick visit. The drive along the lake is nice too.
If you fancy a bit of a drive through nice countryside with a nice lunch, you can also explore the area of the foresty Utrechtse Heuvelrug, which includes the towns of Lage Vuursche, Baarn, Soest etc.. about 30km to the east of Amsterdam. Soest has the royal palace of Soestdijk, and Lage Vuursche is a very nice place to have proper Dutch pancakes for lunch. On the way back to Amsterdam take the backroads, first stopping at the Ferrari dealership of Kroymans in Hilversum if you fancy a dollop of PH vibe, then drive through (boring) Hilversum to get to the lovely scenery of 's Graveland and drive along the river Vecht for some classic Dutch 'meadow and windmill scenery'.
If you want more suggestions about this part of the world let me know. I hope you have a great time in my old neck of the woods.

Well, there's the louwman museum in the hague as discussed in th GG forum, depends if you can persuade the family to spend a day, looking at cars
Once in this neck of the woods, delft is well worth a touristy visit for a day, there's a nice market on Saturday and you can do the delft blue pottery thing. If you are staying in the delft area, we might even be able to scrape together a few local PHers to drink with in one of the nicer pubs in town.
Scheveningen or kijkduin beach are always worth a visit - lots of nice beach restaurants to eat in as the sun sets.
Also in the area is kinderdijk which has lovely windmills and is well worth a visit.

Thanks everyone! John, if I only see this, then that car museum will be worth it! I'm sure the boys will enjoy it too.

Booked into Delft Campanile 25th/26th/27th as it is central and affords easy access to Rotterdam and Den Haag - in case any local PH'rs are around for a beer.

Should be around on the Thursday evening, Friday we will be eating out in delft so might be able to do drinks afterwards and Saturday we might be around in the evening. All depends what the wife has organized for me. http://www.louwmanmuseum.nl/asp/appmain.asp?appact...
