Taking the family to Sunderland for a Christening. What is there to see and do there as we have a day to kill. My daughter is three years old so no suggestions of tandem sky diving please.

On the plus side Newcastle's not far away.

Good point. Perhaps make a game of counting semen and blood stains on the hotel carpet - first to 850 wins. Granted it won't take long but afterwards you could always count the silverfish.

Thanks for the ideas guys!
Going next weekend.
So what is in the local vicinity?
Is the transporter bridge nearby as it looks interesting.

Transporter bridge is about 30 minutes away, A19 south.

There's the glass museum place (try and contain your excitement if you dare), a crappy football stadium, a coast line and beach, and errr... shopping in the town centre (Bridges shopping centre).

There's plenty to do in the area, depending on what you want and how far you're willing to travel out of Sunderland (further the better really wink)

Luckily you're missing derby weekend. My personal recommendation would be to head to Newcastle. I can't think of anything of note to do in Sunderland.

Taking your daughter's age into account my two suggestions would be Beamish Museum and Washington Wetland Centre.

Stadium tour is always worth it. Walk along the beaches. Go to the Marsden Grotto on the road between South Shields & Sunderland - set in a cliff face, lift or stairs to get to it!

Agree with Beamish and Washington Wetlands.
