Following all the work on my A4 2.5TDI Quattro Tip (new stat, belts, pullies & tensioners, full service, renew ATF fluid and repaint the wheel arch) I was looking forward to enjoying a few months trouble-free motoring in it.

Yesterday, I did 200 miles in it, all on a-roads and m-ways, gentle 70, no thrashing and it returned 34mpg which, unless I seriously got it wrong selecting the V6 diesel, means it's bksed. Does anyone here have any ideas on what to check?

Or should I sell it on and buy something that's going to give me more fun for my 34mpg?

Thanks in exasperation.

Have a look at this ad on Autotrader, seems you're actually doing pretty good economy:

Combined mpg for those is 32.1mpg, urban is 22.1mpg and extra urban (no car ever achieves the extra urban figure imhe)is 43.5mpg, so 34mpg is not so bad.
What were you expecting, it's a 2.5ltr with a slush box and 4 wheel drive?

I'm averaging 28, I expected 10mpg more on a run given the manufacturer quoted 43.5.....

Thanks for the confirmation - at least I'm not going to have to spend more money nailing another problem (for a while any way).

Hmmm.... I have a 2001 (B6) 2.5 tdi quattro daily and I can get 34 on that treating like a bit of a hooligan! I drive 100 miles round trip to work, 35 on B road and the rest motorway. Anything like gentle driving gets me near 40 without trying too hard.

Check the MAF (it's date stamped - eg 2001)if that's not been changed it could well contribute to poorer fuel economy if the car has exceeded 80k miles!

Yours a manual per chance? I've never managed to get any 2.5 very far into the 30s.

I would love to get into the 30’s or even early to mid 20’s with my fuel consumption
Help needed I’ve only had the car two weeks after just having a full service, all belts included
The cat itself is in near Ming condition and was under no elusion it was going to be great on fuel but I was hoping for more as stated above 35mpg is a pipe dream
All, any help would be appreciated

Hi Leroy,

as the OP, I feel an update is due. I kept the car for another couple of months but the bills kept stacking up and in the end I got fed up chasing the next broken thing (injectors, oil cooler, expansion tank and another gearbox ATF change), I traded it in for a Saab 9-3 which was a lot less hassle and much cheaper to run. My budget was limited in 2011 so I had to cut my losses.

My advice would be to get it checked by a specialist to see if there's any other issues (ISTR a sensor failed making the ECU think it was underfuelling so poured more diesel in) and hopefully yours will be better than mine - I think my car was just a basket case and not a universal problem.

Hope you get it fixed.

I have a manual 2.0tdi A4 Allroad and its pants as well on fuel - I get about the same as you so consider yourself 'up on the deal'

The odd thing is it seems to vary significantly from poor to very poor and I can't undestand why - air temp possibly makes a difference. If I try to hyper mile on the motorway and keep it under 2k rpm for as much as possible I might just crack 40 on a long run but it is deeply disappointing.

That car itself is the very definition of 'meh' but just about cuts it as a respectable and reasonbly comfy work tool. They do wear their miles well which is the only reason I bought it.
