Note the distinction from 'enthusiasts' cars. These cars don't need to be exciting, rare or exclusive, but they must have real technical merit and represent the fruits of the talents and labours of the finest automotive engineers in the world. Suggest cars that represent man pushing the boundaries of existing technology - past and present.

NSX, Carrera GT - both excellent calls.

I'd put the McLaren F1 in as well, possibly the best example of an 'engineers' car.

But the Veyron is more of an engineering exercise rather than being an engineers car.

Phaeton. Well, not the ultimate, but impressive nonetheless.

Ultimate, hmmm. I think I'd probably have to go with the McLaren F1 or the LFA.

Porsche 959?
I'm sure that had (on paper at least) one of the best spec sheets.

At the risk of sounding a little bit obvious i would also say the Ferrari 458. 9000 rpm on an engine with steel internals!!

Subaru Justy - OK, maybe not the ultimate, but it smacks of some engineers getting together one day and deciding that what was really needed was a 4wd small hatch.

Must be the McLaren F1. The last and greatest incarnation of the 'big engine, light car' supercar model. No turbos, no electronics apart from the essential, totally pure design.

Failing that an Elise.

Mclaren F1, Ground breaking in it's day pushing all knowledge and materials to the max at the time.... so much so it can still hang with pretty much anycar new generation of super and Hyper car.

+1 on the Elise but I would also throw in the classic Mini.
