Hi, I bought a honda vtec engine a few days ago and when it arrived i found that the engine code was scratched off. I asked the seller why was this, and he explained that the previous owner did it and never explained so he assumed it was for insurance reasons.

I checked the engine and it is genuinely a b16a as it claimed to be on the advert but it just bugs me a little. When I do eventually get the engine fitted, and when i register it to the dvla, will they be asking for the engine code etc? and this means i have nothing to show for. i know some say that it may be stolen, and some say because of it being rebuilt. is there any way of getting the likes of honda or some sort of manufacturer to put a stamp back on?

any advice and help would be appreciated, thanks

IIRC the DVLA need the engine number, so you could be in trouble. It'll be worth checking to see if the engine number shows up in more than one place.

The only reason for removing the number is to hide the identity, therfore you would assume it is stolen.

Unfortunately you're now holding the hot potato. If/when there's a problem it will be you that's out of pocket unfortunately. In retrospect you shouldn't have bought the engine. frown

Why would you want to keep an engine that you suspect is stolen?, If the seller did not tell you the engine number was missing just tell him you want your money back.

Not necessarily. Maybe it looks physically similar to a lower output engine, and was put in a car that originally had a small engine. No engine code to hide from insurance?

Question, would you buy a car without the vin plate etc. No, so don`t buy the engine, it`s more than likely hot in more than 1 way.

And bear in mind handling stolen goods is an offence that can carry a prison sentence.

Sadly if it's too good to be true, it often is.

well i did ask for a refund, and the guy said he's already spent all the money on another engine and suggested that i could get it re stamped. he said: "i found something a lil more promising the other day fittin the engine mounts from that engine to my mate engine. there are p30 codes all over the mount confirming the engine is a import 16a engine"

any suggestions?

The question of whether the engine is genuine or not isn't the central issue here. In any case, you only have his word for the engine mounts.

More pressingly, he appears to have sold you a hooky engine, which he knew to be the case when he sold it to you. That he has spent the money is neither here nor there. I would demand that he fully refunds the money otherwise you'll be contacting the police re him selling stolen goods and suing him through small claims court for the loss of the engine.

If that works and I get a refund, I'd be tempted to shop him anyway!

How did you pay? Also, were you aware of the engine plate situation when you purchased?

yes i have, i have a full convo with him in private messages. I bought the engine for £390 incl delivery, looms, harnesses and ecu. and i asked for £390 refund and i will deliver it back at my own expense, that is fair. but i dont see how this would help when i get the engine re-stamped...

no he never said in the advert. he was informative with everything else and was really helpful but that was the only thing he never said and thats what i said to him. the engine is genuine as i did some research and while giving it some thought i had eventually ask for the refund. it's a brilliant engine. but just the fact that the code is gone i can't keep it. i paid by bank transfer, and what do you mean to "shop him"

Use photoshop to put him in a picture next the engine thus proving he's connected to the dodgy engine yes
