Can I run a live lead direct from the battery terminal to an amp, if I put a fuse in between?

I have done this in the past without a problem. Make sure your earth cable is as thick as your live.
Not an expert or a pro. Please bear that in mind smile

Thanks....can I earth anywhere onto the metal body, or is there a preferred way?

The battery is in the boot if that makes any difference.

Yes just make sure the fuse is at the battery end not the amp end being shiny and useless

and make sure the amp is hooked up to the REM cable on your headunit, so it only turns on when your headunit is on, or you will drain your battery.

try and keep the earth short , and make sure both live and earth are decent hefty stuff , use rubber grommets anywhere it goes through a panel

make sure you bare metal the earth point, otherwise you will not have a good contact and will introduce hum into the amp output. Sometimes there are threaded holes beneath the rear seat which will provide an ideal earthing point as you can use a bolt and washer over the earth lead terminal.
