I want to do the Rockies next year... We are restricted to the school holidays as my wife is a Head teacher, realistically that means Easter or the summer 6 weeks...

when would be the best time?

Have been in the summer on a couple of occasions which was fantastic, great weather and loads to do/see, not sure how much you might be hampered by the latter part of winter if you go at Easter, unless you want to ski (also not sure when Easter falls next year, is it early or late ??)

You will a great time, we loved every minute of it and would definitely go back again

Have fun

Unless you're going for skiing, definitely Summer. July is the best month for warm weather, but it can still be very changeable. Last year there was significant snow in the first half of September...

They had a long winter this year. (Due to Global Warming.) Because of this there was still quite a bit of snow about at the beginning of July this year.

You're not going to be able to do much, if you're after summer pursuits, at Easter.

Summer without a doubt. Even then take warm clothes, waterproofs and lots more mosquito repellent than you think you'll need.
