That is my hope! It's not one I've collected before, I just spotted a massive clump of it while on a bike ride and grabbed a sample.

I'd say that's a chicken-of-the-woods. (An elderly example.)

It's edible when young - that one looks tough and leathery. Keep an eye on the spot where you found it - another may form.

No bracket fungi are poisonous, but generally they're too tough / sour to be worth eating.

So perhaps a case of remember the location and check again next year?

yes

One appears up here about once every three years on a Sweet Chestnut tree, always in the same place.
I agree with MC, it has to be got young.
TBH I wasn't impressed with them.
