Clunk's - help me diagnose 'em
Discussion
Clunk 1: When the steering's on full lock (especially to the right), there's a 'clunk' sound/feel which just doesn't feel right.
Clunk 2: Under hard braking something's going clunk at the front, sounds like it's directly in front of the driver.
The former I first found out about when doing a 3-point turn in my road, but was also quite evident on track a few weeks back (a very wet, very twisty Ecuyers, where a dab of oppo was the order of the day
). The latter was very evident on track under hard braking downhill to a particular corner.
Any ideas?

My guess for clunk 1 is a suspension top mount. If so then I think you can upgrade to mk2 mounts like these http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product...

Interesting, hadn't considered that. Thought perhaps a worn balljoint or droplink/wishbone issue. I had the dampers/springs replaced recently @ WiM but I believe the existing mounts were re-used. So that could be a good place to start. Is that something I can check easily? Presume I'll be able to have a look from the engine bay? (Mech numpty)missdiane said:
I had the clunking til I got my tyres changed, not heard it since.
It felt like quite a violent clunk so I never imagined it would be so simple, had been in the garage twice for a look
That's the power steering causing that clunk. Feels horrible like square tyres but it's actually fairly common. Can be made better with a good full alignment but it's usually only fixed with new tyres (no idea why).It felt like quite a violent clunk so I never imagined it would be so simple, had been in the garage twice for a look

I am a mech numpty too but I think you should be able to listen to the top mounts while someone turns the wheel from lock to lock and see if the noise is coming from there.MX-5 Lazza said:

Ah, now mine has power steering so that could explain it. Tyres probably have 2-3mm left to the wear markers.NiceCupOfTea said:
Second one could be the brakes? I had an issue with a clunk when I braked for the first time in a journey going forwards, or after a long motorway run. Apparently something to do with the caliper bolts and elongated holes.
Could be that, and was my first thought (thinking pads moving about), but it sounds more like it's coming from dead-ahead of the driver "in" the engine bay.snotrag said:
Doubt it's top mounts - they don't move like on cars with struts. If you turn the steering and are looking at the top mounts you probably won't see a lot happening?
Track rod end, wishbones, arb links?
First-two were my initial thoughts. Time to get it booked into my good friends @Freelance I think.Track rod end, wishbones, arb links?
