That's a great idea. I was taught it at school.
Perhaps it isn't taught now as injury post education may lead to litigation.

We have teacher in this family. She is Deputy head of large Scouse 11-18 comp. She is same age as me - and subject to same laws back in Switzerland - namely huge fine for j-walking, tripping red man etc. If we did do this - parents punishments would have benn far, far worse than any fine! Cannot understand you
English! Teaching someone to show courtesy of crossing road properly -- means that person will respect the road and rules of road when behind wheel of a car! You should be ashamed of that comment - mate! For "I save lives and want to stop carnage on the roads!" She posted on Paulie's and the bogush site asking for help for campaign to get decent road sense education adverts back on prime time telly and some ideas to replace thos darned out of tune hedgehogs!
Anyway - she is one petrolhead and a rare species - she actually teaches Green Cross, polices her entrances at trudge-in/chuck out and runs a Cycling Proficiency out of her PSE budget. And if you think I have a wild streak .... :hehe; I am one very tame cat in comparison
But -- we are all responsible for our actions - and if one refuses to use crossings, does not look and takes undue care when crossing a road on foot - then one is vicariously liable for one's own injury and possible death! Das ist ganz einfach!

That is logically correct, but not necessarily relevant in the current political climate.
And I can only see it getting worse as more US-style litigation arrives in Europe. Don't forget, the European Parliament wanted to define all car-pedestrian accidents as being the fault of the driver irrespective of actual blame. I've not heard whether it's going to happen or if it's been quietly dropped, but that's the political climate.
