Hi,

Smacking the binnacle is a test procedure/remedy if one had a failed or poorly connected Voltage Stabilizer. Doing this will restore the proper operation of the fuel and temp gauges. If the Voltage Stabilizer is failing, this procedure will work for only a limited time, until the unit totally fails, then replacement will be necessary. If the connector is corroded or loose, the procedure will work indefinitely.

However, since the Voltage Stabilizer does not contribute to the operation of the tach, I suspect your problem lies within the instrument itself, either a short or it is simply dirty and sticks. The remedy would be to have an Automotive Instrument Shop rebuild it, much cheaper than replacement. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE
