I want something cheap to run, cheap to buy, that doesn't break that much, and that doesn't mind sitting on the street most of the time.

My previous car history has been a bit of a mix, but never really had anything that fits this criteria.

Lets say budget of a grand, doesn't matter about size really as long as it can seat two adults.

Merc 190E.

Insurable as a classic, fairly unburstable mechanicals, good parts availability, easy to work on etc etc.

Boring as hell, but a Corsa or a Fiesta will do fine, and there are lots to choose from in the classified ads.

Yeh, it would literally sit around for 90% of the tie, but I suppose it makes sense to kee my no claims and for the odd time I need to drive somewhere it would make sense.

I have a Xsara 1.9TD that cost me £600 in April, gets 55mpg on a run.

Some bits dont work, but for £600 I'm not bothered.

Look hard enough you can get an MX5 for under a grand. Will be very reliable.

RAC's official figures state the MX5 as being the most reliable car. This is purely based on the amount of breakdowns against amount of members with the RAC etc so is all subjective, but just saying wink

Pug 302 estate. 1.9 diesel, does 50+ to the gallon, climate control, half leather seats, etc. Cost me £480 a few months back. Ok, some little things are still to fix, but the engine/gearbox/chassis are fine.

+1 for this. Had a 1.2 1992 Micra in red, with the removable sunroof. Gave it unlimited amounts of abuse including quite a bit of offroading. Sold it for as much as I payed with 4 worn tires and a large dent in the N/S wing after a sign collapsed on it. Nothing ever went wrong and the only thing I ever replaced was the oil, when buying the car!

Thanks all, still want it to look OK, problem with the micras etc is they look terrible, I think these still look ok these days?

http://pistonheads.com/sales/3136443.htm

Seems like a lot of little car for the money? Am I right in thinking the 1,25 engine is better though?

That's the sort of thing I'd go for. Dunno about the 1.25/1.3 difference though. I owned a 1.4 Fiesta of that vintage and it was surprisingly fun to drive and didn't ever stop working. Even after I crashed it.

IIRC the 1.25 is a quieter and smoother engine. BUT is a sealed unit, so any fault = bin it.

The 1300 is more "fixable"

Agreed, but watch out, statistics suggest that you might get arthritis.
