We are looking at loft insulating some properties and by chance we've had a couple of firms call us up saying they can do it FOC, or £25 if the loft hatch needs enlarging.

Initially it was "if someone in the house is on benefits / an OAP" but now it seems that any property is fine.

I am assuming that if they are doing this "free" they are tapping into a government payment of some sort. Does anyone know specifically what it is please?

I ask because I would rather use our own people for going in lofts and if we can get the governmeny payment directly I'd prefer to do that.

Many thanks

I think the 'completely free' is if someone is on benefits etc.

At the end of the day you get nothing for nothing, so I very much doubt that someone will come in and do it for free.

Funnily enough, we were in B&Q on Saturday to buy loft insulation as they were doing 3 rolls for £3. We were approached as we walked in by a company who were offering a service like the one you mentioned. They were quoting approx £185 to do it and said it would be about £500-£600 without the grant.

As I said to the guy, B&Q were doing the above deal on loft insulation and although I probably wouldn't do as comprehensive a job as they would - for approx £30 I could do a job I'd be happy enough with. He agreed with me!

After all, you don't go to a DIY store if you aren't planning on doing the work yourself.

Our local government sponsored outfit will do the job for £50 per roof if tenants are not on benefits.

As for "free" obviously it isn't but someone (either the gubmint or the energy companies) are subsidising / paying for it. I just want to get to understand how to access the cash directly.

I suspect the contract is all stitched up with one or more large 'gravytrain' companies. They pocket all the money and you get two Neanderthals in a Luton van.

(And the insulation, the salaries and the companies' profit is all paid for by your taxes of course)
