Hi

My Tam's tick over is around 650-700 fine when its warm but a pain on cold start. I assume it sould be around 750-800rpm but I think I read somewhere that it was 900???Is it adjusted electronically thro' the dash/ecu menu or manually via the position sensor?

Any help would be appriciated

I'm sure there is a little screw you can adjust between the thottle bodies /air intakes in the engine bay 3-4 from the front of the car I think but Ive never adjusted it Im sure there will be more to it than that though!!

Mine idles at 900, which is fine when it's warm, but in Winter does struggle a wee bit, unless i keep a few extra revs on for 60 seconds or so, come Winter i think 700ish will definitley struggle.

The ecu has the ability to trim the idle by adjusting the ignition advance, however this is very limited and so the main adle adjustment is done vie the idle adjustment screw situated where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle bodies. You should realy "reset the idle" on the ecu via the idle reset command in the diagnostic software.

I would aim for 900 rpm warm idle.

Make sure you get the correct screw, otherwise you`ll put the throttle's badly out of balance wink

Go and see Dom at TVR Power and ask him to do the Lamda earth mod.

Anyone know what that actually involves?

Mine now idles fine after a service at TvR and I asked them to look at it seeing as it wouldn't idle when cold for a few mins. About 900 rpm seems right

Yup! The problem is that the TVR wiring uses a shared earth between the lambda heating circuit and the lamba signal earth (which indeed is the earth for most of the engine sensors). The heating circuit uses a fairly hefty current and can essentially momentarily lift the ground voltage off 0V, thereby interfering with the signal the ecu recieves from the sensors. The mod involves isolating the lambda heater earth from the signal earth by grounding the heater at some convenient location near the sensor.

Thanks for that brogenville I'll have a look at the weekend... seems like 900rpm is the number of the beast!

many thanks for all your comments/contributions

Idle speed is a manual setting. I recently had mine changed (Tam was at X-Works for other work) and now idles warm at around 900. Much better than 700 imho.

The trouble with ‘tweaking’ the idle adjustment screw on its own is it alters the draw on the throttle bodies; which corrects the idle speed but can put the tune of the engine out. You should also re-set the throttle position (using the S6 engine software) after making any changes.

Personally, I would check the balance on each throttle body is correct, in banks of 3, with a syncrometer (should be about 6kg/hr) Then set the idle speed to 900ish and finish with re-setting the throttle position and adaptive maps with the software.

It’s not too difficult but it can be a little fiddly to get the balance correct across all 6 pots. Its an airbox top off job too so you can't do it in 5 mins.
