Can anyone recommend some good places to take children away on holiday abroad that's not a long flight and caters for children 6 and under ????

Do you want to hand them over to other people for childcare or stay in a nice villa as a family?

A few threads on here about Majorca. That's where we are taking our two next year. I used to go every year as a youngster but most recent trip was last year. Excellent place if you get the right areas (not many wrong ones though to be honest). I'd definitely go for a private villa over a hotel if taking kids and if budget allows.

We always do villas. You can generally find a nice villa within budget with its own pool and its a case of balancing everything and looking for the cheapest flight destinations (usually Mallorca or Spain, finding a villa and hiring a car.

In terms of costs, villas in Lanzarote tend to be cheaper but the flights can be more, Spain mainland the further inland the cheaper it gets and Mallorca, you can get a villa without a pool in Cala d'Or because most of the beaches are all within walking distance.

Flights can vary - for me, Thomas Cook were cheapest for the Canaries, BMIBaby for Mallorca and Thomson for Alicante (all from Cardiff).

We've done it on the cheap too - family of four once stayed a week in Peniscola in Spain in a one-bed apartment using the sofa-bed and the use of a communal pool for very little money and it was a great holiday.

If your local airport flies there, I would also recommend the Costa de Almeria - places like Roquetas de Mar or Mojacar.

Overall though, for kids, definitely Mallorca around Cala d'Or simply for the facilities, the boundless attractions on the island and the fabulous safe cove beaches.
