Old Bell, Wooburn Green

I noticed a 'To Let' sign outside this pub in Town Lane Wooburn Green this afternoon. It's been a while since I went there; they stopped their Jazz Nights and then abandoned the oriental menus, both attractions for me. However, Peter Lim, the patron, has worked hard to improve the business and has been landlord since 1998. The food was always excellent, and the real ales, when it was Chinese/Malaysian/Thai, so I can only imagine the more traditional pub menus were good too. It is very sad to see another country pub potentially lost.

Yep, probably going the same way as the Red Cow and the Harrow in Wooburn, Green Man and Magpie in Flackwell Heath, to name but 4 near by.
Still, if the footfall isn't there and Tesco et al carry on selling pop at a loss, what can you do.
I say, make sure that you go to your local tonight for a beer and help prevent it closing!!

The silly thing is that the pub I use most, the Royal Standard (not 'of England') on Wooburn Common, is nearly always busy, while poor old Peter Lim at the Bell struggled to get anyone in.

Seems to be a very sad trend at the moment, a similar fate appears to have happened to The Crown Inn in Woodstock despite recently having a small fortune spent on a refit. I remember a fews years back a friend who was a landlord saying that the breweries were getting landlords in and letting them build up the business over a couple of years before hitting them with 200-300% hikes in there 'rent'.

Unfortunately I'm not interested in sitting amongst the customers of places like The Red Lion at Wooburn Green when I visit my OH, and prefer either The Falcon or The Royal Standard, don't get me wrong I enjoy going and watching the rugby when it's on, but normally head off to the Pond House in Maidenhead for that.

I like the Old Bell, not been for a while but my mate is a daily visitor, will ask him what's going on as the OH is looking for somewhere Gastro Pub'ish

Only been to the Falcon once, a lovely pub by the river can't remember what I ate as it was a few years ago.
I did of course bash my head on the low beam between the bar & our table, just lost the head on my pint not my own head lol

There's 'Under New Management' signs outside the Old Bell now. Anyone know the latest? Their website is still way out of date.
