I've just signed up to the Bone Marrow Register and must say I'm pretty excited.

Chances of me being needed are slim but I eagerly await the day I am.

Anyone else decided to do similar?

Signed up to it years ago when I started donating blood.

Not sure how the system works though, do they contact you when they need a donor?

Good for you. I applied ages ago but never heard back from them. It's on my list of things "to do"

You can also sign up to http://www.anthonynolan.org/. My wife has been on the register for 17 years and was called up for a match and donated her blood stem cells last month. smile

I've been donating blood for years and signed up for bone marrow donation whilist donating blood.

Got a letter few days before Christmas saying I was a potential match and asking me to ring up. Rang up the bone marrow donation people who arranged to courier a sample kit to me. It took a couple of attempts to get it delivered due to Christmas but eventually I got it.

Booked an appointment with nurse at local docs. They took about 8 small samples, packaged them up and off it went to 2 locations. Somewhere in England and a place in Finland. Rang up couple of months later and got told someone else was a better match.

Good thing to do esp as my team leader at work had had a bone marrow transplant for his leakuemia a couple of years ago.

Been on the register for about 15 years, never been needed yet though.

Signed up after a massive crash near death experience, from which I escaped with a twisted finger - figured I was saved for something.....
Got to the first stage of sampling once, but wasn't deemed suitable enough.
Must have been on the register for 10 years now.
If anyone reads this it must be worthwhile signing up.

Weirdly I can't remember if I've signed up for this or not. I have been a blood donor and have signed the basic donor card, and had a blood test at one point years ago because I might have been a match for a relative, but not sure what for (blood type seems more likely, haven't had any blood relatives with leukaemia or similar).

How does the process work?

ETA, just check the AnthonyNolan site, I'm too old now to register (only just wink )
