Route Des Cretes

If we were to do the Route Des Cretes en route from Colmar to Troyes, should we go North a bit and join RDC at the start (St Marie aux Mines??) Would we be missing much if we just cut across from Colmar and joined it a bit further South?

I've tended to go from the Col Du Bonhomme but to do it properly go from St Marie,a great rd though
