A483 / Brecon Beacons
Discussion
I'm heading down to the Brecon Beacons from Manchester next week, and the A483 looks a better route than the M6.
Is it a nice road? Any BiB, cameras, village speed limits? Any nice scenery?
Also are there any recommendations of nice roads nearby, or must-see attractions whilst I'm there?

Thanks for that.
I've also found the following thread, with some good information in it:

Depending upon how long you have will depend upon which way you choose to take.Is it a nice road? Any BiB, cameras, village speed limits? Any nice scenery?

I can recommend various routes but will go with the one i know best and will take in great scenery.
Whilst the A483 south of Newtown is a great road for bikes and cars that enjoy the twisties but it's also, in terms of mid Wales, busy with limited overtaking places.
At Newtown do not turn left at the Lidl traffic lights (483 on to 483) but go straight. The road becomes a no numbered A road (Llanidloes Road) to the Caersws turn where the A470 emerges by the level crossing.
>>>>>>>> Llandinam >>>>>>>>Llanidloes by-pass >>>>>> Llangurig
At the Llangurig roundabout take the LEFT for Rhayader. You're on the Upper Wye valley in to Rhayader
[if you have time you could explore the Elan valley from Rhayader. If you're there approaching 1500 hours and like Red Kites they feed them at Gigrin then]
In Rhayader, travel straight keeping on the A470 >>>>>> Newbridge on Wye.
Just after entering NoW 30 limit turn right on to the B4358 >>>> Beulah.
Go all the way to Beulah - turn LEFT on to the A486 (again) and go to GARTH.
In the village look for the Upper Chapel/Capel Uchaf B4519 and turn RIGHT under the railway bridge. GO. Go to the top and find the viewpoint and park and enjoy view.
Continue along this twisty open route.
There is a Visitor's Centre en route. All the way to other end where you meet the B4520 and turn RIGHT for Upper Chapel and Brecon.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Brecon
You enter the town coming by the Cathedral on the LEFT.

In Garth, carry on for Builth.
You'll come on to the ONE WAY system. Follow it around. At the Wye Bridge be in r/h lane and follow back in to the high st.
At the end as it's about to bend right you turn LEFT on to the Upper Chapel/Brecon road.>>>>>> BRECON
The End.
::::: no fixed cameras only scamera vans so no idea where they'll be ~
other than towns/villages it's NSL:::::

Why go as far as Llangurig? Take this exit to Llanidloes and the B4518 to Rhyader via St Harmon.>>>>>>>> Llandinam >>>>>>>>Llanidloes by-pass >>>>>> Llangurig

I think you meant A483. The A486 goes through Llandysul to New Quay in Dyfed (not Powys).+1 for the B4519 (is this you?) and B4520.

Yes i like the Tylwch - St Harmon - Rhayader route but i do't know how much time the OP has so have given the slightly quicker but longer(mileage) way and, although a main route, the Llangurig - Rhayader route is a beautiful route but either are perfectly feasible.
2. Yes.... apologies i did hit the 6... silly me. I should've written A483.
Thanks for giving me the nod to correct, Red Devil.
I can speel but my tuping is crip

and yes guilty as charged re the Epynt road

Good point about time constraints. B roads are my preferred choice though. Epynt is fantastic. Especially if you can really open the taps. I can still recall a flat out run on a rally 35 years ago. Mk 1 BDA engined Ford Escort Mexico. Happy days.
