We have recently had a new built-in fridge put in with our new kitchen. It makes a really high pitched noise which stops when I switch the fridge off at the wall and then flick it on again but the noise starts again after a few minutes.

Does anyone know how to stop the noise all together (no, I'm not going to switch the fridge off!)

What sort of noise is it, other than high pitched?

Is it likely to be an alarm of some sort, i.e an electronic beep, or when it stops does it gradually reduce, like it's somehting catching in a fan?

No not an alarm. You don't really notice it unless its quiet in the kitchen. Its not the fan, more like a buzzing.

Did you fail to kill one of the pheasants?

Of course it might be the "nozzle" (what's that bit called where high pressure becomes low to create cooling effect?).

I would say 'go round the back and whack it' but you can't.

Thank you for that - I will look for the 'nozzle' - whatever it may be! Actually thinking about it I am expecting the electrician to visit in a few days so I will ask him to locate the nozzle.

I once had a fridge which made a high pitched noise - turned out it was because it was exactly level. I took some time to make sure it was and the noise went away.

Easy way to test - lean on the fridge and push it slightly in various directions.

Aha! It's called the "expansion valve".

for one, do not switch a fridge off at the mains and then back on again, wait at least 10 minutes before doing so.

As for your problem, is it a continuous noise or does it swtich off with the hum of the compressor from time to time? If it is a system noise then it may well continue for a few secs after switching off at the mains. How do you know its not a fan?

+1.

Recently got a new freezer which was really noisy, more of a low frequency noise but it was due to it not being level.
