I will be changing my current 4 x 4 at the end of this year and have started thinking about what to go for, I'm seriously impressed with the latest Disco 4, especially as there is an uprated engine and gearbox on the way in October. However, I am concerned about reliability and wondered if there are any owners of late/new vehicles who could offer their experiences, to either convince or put me off. I've doen some surfing and come across some horror stories about water leaks and electircal gremlins ruining ownership, one guy has even gone as far as top start his own web site (www.landroverhell.com), which has attracted an alarming number of followers. Help please.

Check out Disco4.co.uk...

On the whole, Disco 3 & Disco 4 are both very reliable. IMO - Any horror stories you read on the WWW should be taken with a pinch of salt. You'll always hear about the problems, never about the successes.

I have the d4 xs.

We had the electric upgrade a few months after we bought it and it's only needed service check ups since.

The 3ltr is a fantastic engine and shifts like sh!t off a stick.

We had a Disco 3 for 4 years/42k miles. No issues. The D4 has been with us for over a year and other than a service, no issues at all.

Had all the Discos since '94, never had any problems. The Disco 4 is infinately better than the 3 in all areas. The options are getting better, I usually get the HSE but this time round spec'ed up the GS and saved £9k.

I have done 25k miles over two years in my D4 and despite some "low battery" issue in the beginning which were sorted by a software upgrade it has been magnificent. It is very well build, feels rock solid and the engine and the gearbox are superb. If you really want to be picky you could argue that there is a slight turbo lag from start until the double turbos kick in and that the seats are a bit utilitarian compared to the FFRR. I also own a FFRR tdv8 and would argue that the D4 is the better all-round product everything taking into consideration. (I don't have the two cars in the same country - i case you think i am a complete nutcase).

From a practicality point of view, they are the same. The revised D4 dash and interior is much more luxuriously appointed than the D3 and brings it closer to RR levels. The new engine makes a huge difference and it handles and stops much better. Exterior wise, I think it looks better however all the colour coded arches and bumpers will take more upkeep.

Are the wheels rounder? wink
I've just bought a late disco 3 HSE, it was 10K cheaper than a Disco 4 which would be a couple of months younger. One area where the 4 isn't infinitely better.
If I had the cash I probably would have got a 4, but I'm quite happy with the saving and very happy with the car.
