I want a Porsche 911 - but can't afford one!
Discussion
Does anybody else wind themselves up endlessly obsessing about one particular car, but which is currently so far out of reach as to drive you insane? Now, I'm not even talking about a Turbo. A 996 C4S would be absolutely perfect for me, but unless I somehow start making £10k a year more, there's absolutely no chance
Wait, am I allowed to post on PH if I'm too poor to buy and run said automobile?

I'm obsessed with owning a V10. Either an M5 or an Audi S8. I wish I just went straight for the M5 instead of the 535d. Feel like I sold myself short.
Got some things to sort out before I can look into it, like a new baby due, moving house, getting a van and getting a popcorn and candy floss machine before I can even think about a V10!
I will get one. Just seems a million miles away.

As above. A work colleague of mine had something similar a few years ago on a B plate for about £10k - pretty much the same as a reasonable 2 year old Mondeo, for example.J4CKO said:
Basically if you work for someone and PAYE, have kids and a house then you are screwed for buying cars, when I was contracting I saved none grand in a year for my car, bought it and now still have it nearly 4 years later as went back to PAYE and a lower salary.
How is whether you are employed or self employed relevent? I dont get that, can you explain it? If you are saying that as a contractor you get paid more then I can understand that but its never as straightforward as that. Not so much out of reach to buy, but the costs of ownership of some cars would destroy me financially. These cars include a TVR Cerbera, BMW 8 series and a BMW M5.
Another car is the Ferrari f355. I've wanted one ever since they were first launched, and have always promised myself one. However even if I did get to the point of saving up £40k to buy one, as with the cars above, the costs of running one would ruin me.
Basically, buying the car is one thing, but looking after it properly and using it as intended is something else.
