carb engine fuel pumps
Discussion
one more thought, yesterday it was s
t hot here in Germany and after driving the car and having it rest for 1 hour I had the funny pump noise again. So the heat in the engine bay obviously has been heating up the fuel (probably in the catch tank). After driving a few km the noise went away.
So new builders that are driving mostly in hot areas should take care of cooling the fuel system parts effectively. I might add that I have a panel underneath the engine and the fuel components are sitting in a corner where air is probalby not reaching them.

If you have a low pressure pump feeding the swirl pot then it is a good idea to put a regulator in the return line so that swirl pot has a bit of pressure in it to stop fuel evaporating at the suction to the high pressure pump. However make sure that low pressure pump has enough pressure to beat the new regulator or vapour lock may occur
