Anyone know what this is on my landing? . I thought it was an internal bell, but it appears to be wired in series with a PIR.

Cheers

Looks like a smoke alarm but don't know why it would be wired to a PIR - unless it's just wired to the contraol box that way!

How come you have something in your house and don't know what it is?

If you have just bought the house, did you not ask the vendor 'WTF is that?'

It looks like a smoke alarm sensor with built in light - try burning something close to it and see what happens

Agreed it looks like a smoke detector - we had similar ones at the office. Hardly your average domestic smoke alarm though, hope it's not connected to an autodialler........

Thanks for all the advice. After a bit of googling, it does appear to look very much like a smoke detector. I'm installing a new alarm, so I'll do some more digging tomorrow and test it by burning something. The limited zones on the old alarm must have meant them sharing the fire zones with the pir.

That would not be good as smoke detectors are meant to work 27/7 not only when the alarm is set.....

Yes I agree. Maybe it was for when the house is empty. To alert the neighbours. There are also separate battery powered smoke alarms throughout. The new alarm panel I Am fitting has fire zones which are active 24/7.

I'll confirm my findings tomorrow as I'm not living in the house yet.

Thanks again for all the pointers everyone !

Which rightly warrants the reply 'Which planet are you on?'
