Thanks for all the advice. After a bit of googling, it does appear to look very much like a smoke detector. I'm installing a new alarm, so I'll do some more digging tomorrow and test it by burning something. Yes I agree. Maybe it was for when the house is empty. To alert the neighbours. There are also separate battery powered smoke alarms throughout. The new alarm panel I Am fitting has fire zones which are active 24/7. Paul (Alarm Man)
I'll confirm my findings tomorrow as I'm not living in the house yet.
