I've sold my car to a private buyer after a viewing yesterday. The money has transferred into my bank and the car is being picked up this evening.
However, because I transferred a private plate from the old car to my new one I don't yet have a V5 for the car being sold. The transfer was done at the local DVLA office on 5th August and I have received the replacement MOT and tax disk (within 4 working days - top marks DVLA) as well as the entitlement to the original registration plates which have been put on the car.
The owner to be knows all of this and I have shown him the letters from the DVLA and he is happy to buy the car and sort the details out at a later date.

How is the best way to cover me when he comes to pick the car up this evening?
I was thinking along the lines of two copies of a signed receipt with registration, VIN, details of sale and both parties addresses. I've also got photocopies of both sections of the old V5 which could be filled in if necessary, although they obviously show the wrong registration.

He's taking a risk buying with no V5, but I'm sure he's done his checks. As for yourself, I don't see the problem? He buys the car, and applies for his own V5 if needs be. You send a letter off to the DVLA informing them that you no longer own the car. Job done.

Agreed the risk is mainly his, but I'm a trustworthy fella. smile
I was thinking more along the lines of covering me for any speeding fines/parking tickets etc which may occur until the new V5 is filled out when it eventually arrives. That's the current plan - sell with receipt and wait until the new V5 arrives and then fill out as normal.
Just wondered if the PH massive had any better ideas/experience - it must be a fairly common thing when a plate is transferred and the old car sold.

It is the registered keepers responsibilty to complete the V5 as a change of owner and post it to DVLA.

However in practise you can do this once you've recived the documents back. If you recive a ticket you just tell the authorities who was driving the car (as a rental company would) Recipts should cover you.

Doesn't it need the signature of the new registered keeper in addition to their address details?

I'd probably draft receipt that includes:
Time and date of sale/collection
The buyer's full details

If you're worried about DVLA not accepting the v5, perhaps include a note on the receipt to the effect that the buyer requests DVLA take their signature on the receipt as confirmation (in lieu of that that would normally be on the v5) of details... then send copy to DVLA with the v5.

That's pretty much what I did - copy of my receipt is here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11892568/Sale%20Receipt.pd... (in case anyone else wants to use it & doesn't have Word to hand).
Two copies of this were printed and completed.

I spoke to the DVLA this morning and they said that I could send a letter to them telling that I was no longer the keeper of the car and the new keeper would have to fill out a V62 to get a V5 issued. That however, would cost the new keeper £25 - so I'm going to wait for the new V5 to turn up.
