I am looking at doing a driver training day which involves skid control techniques on an Airfield and a track session.

Would it be better is I over-inflate the tyres a little in order to get the car sliding slightly sooner than normal? Are there any other benefits of doing this? (Tyre wear, etc?)

Thanks

Yes - over inflating them will help to stop them from rolling over the shoulders, wearing down the sidewalls and (in extreme cases - particularly with soft walled road rubber) popping off of the rim (saw it happen to a Vauxhall at a car limits day - two new rims were required).

Interesting. It's a car limits day I am looking at.

How differently would the car behave with over-inflated tyres though? Would the skid correction techniques apply in the same way on the road with normal pressures?

Don't think upping the pressure will make a big difference to your handling for a car limits day. Speak to Andy on the day but he usually seems to recommend pumping them up a bit; especially if they aren't particularly low profile.

Be warned, tyre wear on these days is high - probably more so than a track day although its kinder to brakes etc. That may also be down to the surface.

Don't forget to drop the pressure back down again before you head home unless you want a hard ride.

Check my old posts or search as quite a few reviews of Andy's days if you want to know a bit more about what to expect. Have fun!
