Hi!

I've just returned from a lovely visit to Scotland, where the roads are simply breathtaking.

Parts of the M6 are stunning too, especially through Cumbria.

I'm well aware of mobile vans on bridges there and am normally well behaved.....you know, the occasional spirited acceleration, but cruising around 80 to 85.

There have been occasions where I think I may have been travelling a little too fast though and this will worry me for the next two weeks, when I'll anxiously be checking the post every day, dreading the old invitation from BiB.

Is it not ridiculous though that certain roads, like the M6 in Cumbria and the M6 toll road (more like an empty test track!) are not de-restricted?

I think this would allow lots of us to get the speed thing out of our systems and serve to calm us down a bit, actually making us safer, less frustrated drivers in the long run.

Very very worried!

The trouble is that if they were de-restricted then you're taking away massive revenue generators - you see a nice clear road, the police / camera partnerships see ££ signs.

I'm amazed how fast some people go on the M6 Toll - pretty well every time I've used it I've seen an unmarked car stopping someone.

I'd love to see some limit free roads in the UK but I really don't think its an option for us. Reasons:

UK drivers do not have a good enough level of awareness, skill or plain courtesy to deal with it. Old people (not picking on them) sitting in the wrong lane, middle lane hogs refusing to move for quicker traffic blah blah blah.
Barry boys / chavs flocking like seagulls to a chippy. Many of whom would be killed by their own stupidity.
Government would never allow it due to loss of income.
UK roads are not designed for it. Would you want to drive for an extended period at 100+ leptons on our potholed roads. Short blasts are fine but .....

I think its something that could be done in time but would need education, practice and modification of the roads.

I must admit to "making progress" on the M6 toll, it seems the average speed in the fast lane is 10-20mph more than on say the M5. It is like a empty test track and I've never seen any police presence marked or otherwise. Had a bit of a tete a tete with and XKR a while ago which was fun, he had me licked in the lower lepton range but lost out higher up.

100 leptons? That's space shuttle speed levels!

Our motorway surfaces are no worse than many of the Autobahns and they are a good deal straighter. The biggest issue is traffic levels. Somewhere like the M6 toll though is an obvious place to raise or remove the speed limit.

I was told by a reliable BiB that it was not in fact policed in the early days and I can certainly believe that from what I saw then.

I don't believe in driving like a dhead, but I do believe that we should drive to the conditions.....that we can't frustrates the life out of me.

In fact, don't you ever watch Traffic Cops, look at the quite horrendous stuff that goes on, only to be met with the most pathetic of punishments, and think WTF??

The decent folk are being criminalised in our society...you know, cruising happily down the empty motorway at 5am, no danger to man nor beast, nailed.

I really appreciate coppers who will stop us and have a quiet word to calm us down a bit....that earns my respect.

[Only happened to me the once.....I was racing him an an Evo!!.....left him for dead.....he was very direct when he caught up with me in the slow zone, but very decent too.....told me to fk off home before I killed myself....top bloke!]

I've been down the M6 toll MANY times, and it's always pretty damn quiet! Something quite strange about sitting in the inside lane with such a good road surface smooth and calm and still doing a "reasonable" speed.

I found this photo on another 5series board a while back, looks to me like the M6 toll for sure, clearly it's a UK road even if it's not the M6, but can only think of M6 toll and then M4 severn crossing that have motorways going to a toll, sure isn't M25 dartford crossing! Don;t think it's possible to approach that at 20 let alone 200!

On the Severn crossing they regularly have laser traps at the toll approaches - I dread them doing that on the M6Toll as you'd probably get rammed up the backside if you did slow to 50 at the signs.

Personally, high speed driving scares the heck out of me!

I get far more fun from rapid acceleration and roadholding than from high velocity travelling.

15 years ago I used to own a stunning moonstone blue RS Cosworth 3dr. Being 22 at the time I was travelling far too fast one evening on the M62, dicking about with another car, overtaking one another , etc. After that my memory switches to being stationary in the middle lane and someone trying to help me out of the car, me with a throbbing pain over my right eye. Then it goes black and I remember being in an Ambulance, then later in Hospital. Turns out my immature approach to motorway driving had caused a 5 car pile up.

Even now when travelling at say 85 leptons, I feel uneasy.

I don't know why I'm gassing on really, I suppose I'm making the point that it's OK blasting along at Vmax but when things go wrong, they do in a huge way and other innocent people can get sucked in and spat out. I guess that's why the tempting spots are so heavily policed. That and the potential to make serious revenue.

Much above 125mph today, even with a good brief and you face the prospect of doing a stretch. Especially if you have previous of this kind.

I realise OP is talking about making it legal where and when conditions allow but that's just not going to happen.

Head to the autobahns if that's your thing but I think finding sporting cars with lower overall limits than M cars is unfortunately the way to go in this country.

That won't stop me buying them, however. wink

Surely 201mph there is leaving very little room to get it stopped before reaching that toll?!

I think that maybe the photo is a little suspect, or maybe the HUD is being manipulated or is buggered. Either way, that toll booth is gonna be very up close and personal very soon indeed,

M6 toll unrestricted...thinking about it, would you really want to travel on a road with all manner of misfits and joy seekers maxing their Saxos and Astra diesels?
Of course there needs to be a reappraisal of Mway speed limits. Surely we can't be at the stage where, as human beings, we will never be allowed to drive at anoything more than 70 mph. It might be coming - I did hear rumbles from Philip Hammond about introducing an 80mph limit - which would at least reflect the real world. Personally I think during more lightly trafficed night hours - say 10pm to 5am - the limit could be higher - 90 or 100.
In the meantime I'd setttle for 80 as better than nothing.

I've been done twice by Dumfries and Galloway cops doing 85. If you didn't see a van you're probably ok.

That photo is real.......it's grabbed from a video I've seen that since seems to have disappeared from the internet.............E60 M5 proving they CAN do 207mph when delimited.

Other than motorways, you are pretty safe to drive in Scotland as fast as you feel safe. It's the only public area in the UK where my Z4MC gets to stretch its legs so you should be OK.

I was talking with some bobbies at a coffee stop just outside Fort Wiliam and they said pretty much the same. They are after dangerous drivers, not the odd car doing 90 on a decent A road when the roads are empty.

I'll let you know when I get my first ticket.

Agreed, tree are so many great roads in the north and south of our fair land that there's no need to take to the motorway for your thrills.

If you're lookingfor a good road, check the news for ones that bikers die on.
