Looking to buy new brakes/pads soon and I could easily buy standard looking but better or worse performing depending on the brand or upgraded which will stop me far better but incur an increase in premium.

The whole Pattern/OE thing is complicated further now by the fact that established brands such as Ferodo and Vehicle makers such as Renault also offer a budget (chinese made) pad as well as their premium range. When the garage says "yeah they're genuine Renault etc" they could still be budget pads! It's a minefield out there.
