Evening,

My second Sky+ SD box has finally given up the ghost, so I need to replace the unit. Sky are not interested in offering me a cheap second HD box, so I have been nosing around eBay and there seem to be refurbed units with 12 months warranty for only £100.

Now, which of the makes are particularly poor? The Amstrad SD boxes were terrible, so I'd prefer not to make the same mistake again!

Thanks

Which bit of the box died?

We had a Pace box which ran faultlessly until Sky did a system update, which introduced all manner of hassles.

If it's only the hard drive that's gone, pop a new one in. There are a number of guides online, I followed one when I upgraded my hard drive from 80gb to 500gb. Anything else, get a new box.

Surely the age old threat of cancelled contract due to poor customer service and hardware should be enough to get a new box out of them?

Several parts I imagine. It manages to miss out chunks of recordings despite having a replacement disk, and now the optical sync is waaaay out. (And this one has no option to adjust the delay) Oh, and it turns off randomly.

It's had a hard life.

I can pickup a AMSTRAD DRX890 (3d job as well) for £100 delivered with warranty. Seems a good deal, but is this because the box is likely to burst into flames due to poor construction. I shan't be bothering to call Sky, I vowed to never do so again and I don't need the stress.

Be careful when buying a refurbed box. We've had a couple and the phone/modem socket's which come in the refurbed versions haven't worked so couldn't get a callback signal to Sky.
