Have had the wedge out all day today at Snett. As the day wore on, I noticed that in fourth if I pulled the stick back a little there was a metallic meshing - like holding a piece of metal against a rotating cog. I first noticed it when changing hard where you naturally pull back farther than you need to. This meshing also happens if i push straight down on the stick. This then migrated to all of the other gears with fifth now producing a constant grinding sound which partially stops if I lift the stick. Everything else seems fine (with the gearbox at least). Is there an obvious cause from the symptoms I describe?

Yes and it's an easy fix, do a search for remote gearbox linkage bushes

My lad did explain to me whats happens coz the same happened to me some time ago in my Audi because i tended to drive with my hand resting on the gearstick which had the effect of putting stress on gears inside the box,i only had to twitch the gear lever a little and it would still cause gears to move and wear against each other inside the box so ive changed my bad habit and dont leave my hand on the stick anymore. If it is the bushes on the remote linkage they should be phospher bronze,i got a local engineering shop to make me some new ones modelled on the old ones and the rod going through them.

First had that on my car when I was trying to outdrag a Mitsu Evo in the Lakes... I thought the 'box had died!

Does seem a bit odd that yours show up in 5th mind, it's usually only 2nd and 4th where you notice it.

Thanks for advice all - will get under and have a look in the morning. Definitely worst in fifth - it was grinding away without even touching the stick on my long drive back from Snett. It did show up first in 4th about halfway through the day.

Blimy Ian , poor wedge , you pick some serious machinery to outdrag .. those things are usually driven by louts anyway !

He was 4-up, I was 2-up... I was in front until the box started grinding, then he got past when I backed off biggrin

To be fair I couldn't outrun a motor factor's delivery van last weekend, but in my car's defence the road was single-track with high hedges and he had me clearing a way for him...

Thanks all; looks like the bushes are shot. Since the wedge is basically trim-less, I can see from inside looking down that the top half of one bush has snapped off and on the other side there is only one bush left! I must have been changing gear a little aggressively trying to catch the 911s!

I feel this may also need doing on mine , I've had a look on past threads and followed links trying to locate nylon linkage bushes, no luck so far, any ideas??????? Or does anyone know the dimensions as I could easy turn some. I think I'll be able to get g/box mounts here ok.
Cheers
Adam

Ditto, ended up getting the last set, there must have been a rush on them after I posted the link.
I'm going to get the castrol SMS s today, I was going to go with the difflock but at 44 quid for the oil and then 45 quid to send it to me I decided the castrol was worth a go

Sounds like fun! Unfortunately the side ones on mine have split in half but I think I can get to them from the top. Having looked am now wondering if I can rotate the lever too so that the kink faces forwards - as I have bucket seats and harnesses fitted the normal position of the lever gives a very awkward position to change gear.
