Any helpful advice re owning a Lotus Exige
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and thought I'd try and seek some useful (I realise I'm leaving myself wide open for some forum member tar and feathering being a newbie using terms such as 'helpful' and 'useful' but I've bit the bullet and used them anyway!!)
I'm thinking of buying a Lotus Exige and am really after some words of advice as to is it really a weekend car or is daily use a sensible viable option. I only work about 10 miles from my home so I'm not looking at clocking up thousands of miles each year.
Practicality is obviously of some concern, though I've no animals or children to worry about. I have considered the possibility of buying an old Fiesta for everyday use and then only using the Exige when I'm not at work but obviously this incurs the extra cost of keeping two cars on the road. Go compare have given me a quote of approx £550 but to get this I'd have to put all my no claims on the Lotus and start again with the Fiesta.
Do many of you use your Exige as your sole motor? Is it a very expensive vehicle to maintain i.e. servicing etc
Your words of wisdom but be gladly heard.
Many thanks

I can't help on the Exige. But you don't have to start again on a policy.
Call up a good broker (not an internet search/compare site) - e.g. Adrian Flux and ask for a quote on a shadow or mirror policy - will in effect copy your main no claims to a second car, it won't accumulate any further no claim, and there may be additional restrictions, but worth a go.

I have an Exige but it's a weekend/track toy, I did use it as a daily for a week and got fed up with it, it's a ball ache for getting in and out and the condition of the roads made it less comfortable than any of the other cars so it went back to being used at the weekends or fine evenings. I did get my broker to mirror the NCB on my other car on the Exige and I also got uk and European track day cover included in the policy, think it was about 500 or thereabouts.
You could use it as a daily but it would take the shine off it, it did for me anyway...
I think buying a cheaper daily is the way forward, but that's just IMO..

Mine is a daily driver and my only car. Commuting distance is minimal for me, though I can totally see it being an absolute bore if you face quite a bit of stop/start traffic. If your route to work takes in some nice roads, then it's so much fun taking them in such a great driver's car on the drive home after a hard day at work.
It's not the most practical thing in the world, but I get by just ok. Honestly speaking, I find it quite frugal, so my fuel bill is much better than my previous cars. I'm still on the factory fitment Yokohama A048's, which generally aren't the most durable of things, but I have 3mm tread left on the rears, and they were fitted 6000 miles ago (and that's with a Nurburgring trip included). Servicing can vary greatly from independent to main dealer (obviously). 3rd service and MOT was quoted at under £200 from independent, but just a tad under £400 from main dealer.
I'm coming up to a year of ownership now, and although I've had a low couple of months (had two oil leaks tended to), its such a joy to own and drive I couldn't bare not using it regularly. The way I see it, it only had 8500miles put on it in the two years the first owner had it from new, so it's only fair I pile them on to make up it (at 17500 now after 11 months ownership)

Thanks everyone for the advice, it's an S2 I'm looking at, feel a little more secure having the Toyota engine due to the reputation of the K Series.
The Adrian Flux recommendation sounds interesting I was unaware you could do that with insurance. Though there is more expense involved if I'm to be able to do I've got to say a daily hack does have it's appeal especially through these British winters we appear to be getting nowadays.
Your advice/experience has been gratefully appreciated.
