I would loved to have been in the room when they were told.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/871...

I'm all for things to be done safer etc, but seriously, getting some H&S civvies to try and tell these guys how to be safe and to make it all pink and fluffy, because of course we can't be seen to shoot people.

A senior military source said: "Historic Scotland thought everything looked far too dangerous and the Marines were told to tone everything down. That included abseiling down the walls of the castle and the re-enactment of the fast roping on to the 'captured' ship.

"The Marines were also not permitted to shoot the pirates. Instead all the bad guys surrender. It is all a bit sad really."
All a bit pathetic more like, but par for the course as it's laughing stock territory.

Money for nuthin...maybe get a blister on your thumb...STOP call H&S can't have a blister!

One of the comments -

"If something went wrong at a display the marines were doing the council wouldn't be held responsible. H&S is a solution for a problem that doesn't exist."

Hate health and safety with a passion when it goes Beyond it's scope.

Interfering busy bodies trying to look busy in order to justify their existence in the first place.

I mean H&S in the teesside beam mill or the bos plant is warranted. H&S in the office warning you about how to carry some books or telling you to be weary of paper cuts..... fking pointless waste of oxygen.

Now that's funny! (And very sad at the same time).

Why didn't they just show the reenactment on a series of large stick man pictures, (nothing too graphic obviously). That would have at least saved the Marines from the embarrassment of having to do the health and safety training.

what i dont understand is why people entertain these silly ideas.

in my mind the conversation would go like this.

Edinburgh Council: sorry lads we need you to do H+S training to slide down a rope even though you have already had military training, oh... and we want you to hug the pirates at the end,

RM Commander: Screw you, we aren't doing it then

end of

Thing is - the RMs are as hamstrung as anyone else now.

I watched a documentary filmed in 2000 and the way the instructing staff had to handle the recruits with kid gloves was embarrassing! That said, they were having a real issue recruiting and retaining the young 'uns back then. Maybe now the forces are more popular, they can get stuck in more.

In defence of the HSE, they are having a campaign on at the moment to stop this sort of bks from happening. In most cases the HSE do not support the things done by councils in the name of H&S.

Wonder what would of happened if they went to the training and then at the last minute did it their way anyway. Surely no one could stop them once in motion and who's going to tell off a bunch of marines? I wouldnt.

"Lesley Brown, of Historic Scotland, which is responsible for Edinburgh Castle, said all the procedures in the show had to be checked against health and safety standards and "risk assessed for impact to the castle".

For fecks sake, it's a castle that's been there for hundreds of years!

I had the same problem in Portsmouth when we were told we had to use rubber bases on our heavy tripods in the dry dock, in case we damaged the massive stones. My comment that the Luftwaffe didn't seem to do much damage didn't go down too well....

We must understand, we are completely in-capable of thinking for ourselves or acting in a manner which will reduce harm to people.

We must be told what to do at every possible opportunity.

I think the litigious [sp] culture we now have in the country is mostly to blame, everyone is absolutely scared stless of being sued.

But that doesn explain the pink and fluffy "don't shoot the pirates" attitude though, which is just pathetic.

Would only get away with it once - but they've got to carry out 24 performances. Maybe at the last performance on Saturday night!

TBH I wonder if that part of the story is a load of bks anyway. I can't see how the mechanics of fast roping from the castle would work: there's no overhead rigs (like the Royal Tournament could use) and the castle itself is separated by a deep moat, which pretty much rules out vertical descents to the esplanade. Whereas abseiling from the half-moon battery is usually part of the RM performance anyway. There's no way of rehearsing it properly at Redford Barracks (where they have the castle esplanade marked out on the parade ground), which would explain being sent elsewhere. The other option may be weather-related - they have to perform come rain or shine (more often the former in Edinburgh).

Having the pirates surrender though is just nonsense.

It's not just councils though - it's rife EVERYWHERE !

Sorry, did the big letters strain you eyes a little ?
Just read that back - that'll teach me to type and do something else at the same time.

I hate H&S, all the H&S chaps i've ever come across are useless jobsworths.

They should have just gone "yeah we will do it properly" then "forgotten" about all that and "accidently" fast roped!

As for the not shooting pirates, that is just more PC crap, but of course we don't want the kiddies to think about death, or the natural order of life or anything....

"They were also not allowed to simulate shooting pirates, who would instead have to give themselves up."

OK, I think this is all fitting together now. Alex Salmond has invited our old friend Daffy (from Libya) to star at the Edinbugh Tattoo as chief pirate....

So you'd rather machines weren't fitted with guards and emergency stops and the employers could not bother providing PPE when stripping things like asbestos out of old buildings then?

There is nothing wrong with H&S, where it falls down is in some of the clowns who at best 'interpret' the rules and at worst blatantly make up their own set. The ALARP concept is actually quite sensible.

This is a pretty good summation IMO.

We do lots of stuff at work that could result in death for someone if it went wrong, so we do it properly as generally killing or injuring people out for a good time isn't a great business practice.

We do however need to hold a raft of risk assessments and associated things. Recently we almost missed out on a tender because one of our risk assessments didn't fit with the model on the council check-list, this was despite the fact that our risk assessments are prepared to HSE guidance and checked every 2 years by someone appointed by the HSE.

H&S at most levels is common sense, and those that make a living from it (especially in local authorities) are jobsworths who almost never understand the specifics of an industry they are assessing the quality of the H&S in.

Sounds like the mong doing the risk assessment hasn't got a clue. Not the HSE's fault.
