House Move must have BIG garage
Discussion
All, we are thinking of moving away from West Sussex as I would like some grounds and the 'country life' is something I fancy, we need 5 bedroom and I want a big garage, the boss would like a swimming pool (eeeemmmm not sure myself) I think we could go up to about £500,000 ish.
I have worked all over and lived in a few different places but would not really want to go as far as scotland etc.
I have found this one:

That just makes me sad. It's crazy what you can get for your money when you step away from London.I had a mate a few years back who came from York, she had a house in Wimbledon with her husband that was worth way over a million pounds and we worked out one day in work that if they sold up and paid everything they owed off they would have about 800 grand left and I said to her well why are you still in London she she her husband enjoys being a tube ride from the West End, I was born in London and I'm buggered if I understand that view!!!

Lovely house and grounds but Spalding? Theres a reason you get so much for so little.
Good roads to utilise with his newly acquired Subaru
That area(ish) of Lincolnshire is actually quite nice. I spend a lot of time in Bourne seeing family and if you get yourself 2 labradors and a car that can deliver it's power then it's a perfect place for both walking and driving!

I guess it depends on how sociable you are. If you can sit at home for a week at a time with little human contact, then fair enough but if like most people you need to see a variety of interesting people from different backgrounds then The Woolpack won't cut it.Personally, I am very happy with my own company... we get on great.

Indeed, its a good area and Spalding is a nice market town.

Thanks Lads for your views, funny enough one of my wifes best mates lives in Bourne but I have never been up there so that could work.
I have to say its the garage thing for me, the main reason I have got rid of 'things' in the past is beacause i had no place to put them, with a big garage I would never have to sell anything again......

You do get more for your money as you move out of London, but there are hot-spots were it just gets silly again.
North Devon is pretty cheap, and quite nice in places. A bit of a long drive from big shopping centres though.
What are your requirements for work commitments? How much work do you want to do on a place, or does it have to be fully "done"?
If the boss wants a pool, work our how much it would cost to get one fitted, then knock it off your budget. We can then go to town with £475,000 to spend.

We are in a good position in that Im just returning from the Middle East after many years and I wont have to earn to much and my wife gets a good police medical Pension so we could look any place, one of the reasons I thought Lincoln way is they still have Grammar schools, number 1 child is off to uni this year, number 2 is at boarding school and 3 and 4 are very small so if we decide to move the next year could work for us.
I'm happy to undertake some work but nothing to major!

I'll give you a month before you're asking about planning regulations for sheds and outhouses.
I think lots of us on here empathise with your thinking. I have been considering moving for a couple of years and have come to the conclusion that in any area where I want to be (Berkshire/East Wiltshire/Sussex/bits of Hampshire) it's just impossible. My criteria are; triple garage, large gardens, 4 x beds and en-suite bathroom (not just a shower). Usual sort of stuff for around £750k. Can I find anything? Nope!
I went through the same thing 10 years ago, had a detached house on a good plot in Surrey, with planning permission to extend to 5 bed house. I didn't need to be in Surrey work wise, had to be within 1 hour from a decent motorway, and my wife had stopped working as we had two young children. Initially we looked west, North Somerset, North Devon, etc but we felt the step up in house just wasn't enough, then looked at South Lincs (too flat) and ended up with the Shrewsbury OS map. I was happy to live anywhere on that map, and we ended up just over the border into Wales. I'm 50 mins from M6/M54 junction and 1hr 10mins from M6/M62.
Swapped a three bed scruffy 1946 detached house, for a five bed 1840 farmhouse, with 10 acres and a triple garage. haven't wanted to move since!
There is definitely value to be had out there without moving too far from 'civilisation'!

made the same move about 4 years ago myself. Im about 3 miles into Notts from the Lincs border. Similiar kind of barn, same criteria
I dont have kids, but the village school is excellent and has class sizes of 8-10...then local Grammar school for some
Im from Lincs originally, spent 10 years down the smoke and when I got a job that was home based/travel I moved back up here for better standard of living/slower pace of life when at home etc
I wouldnt go back ...well in fact I couldnt ...dont want to sell a £500K lovely barn in a village to get a 3 bed semi on a noisy estate where I used to live LOL

Having only spent half your budget on my current house, with a list of requirements like you have, I'd be looking seriously at having something built.
It's what i plan on doing next time.
But you have equal trouble finding land, if not more, because all the decent sized plots, say 1/3 acre plus are snapped up by developers before they ever get to the market because the agents know they want them. It's easily said more difficult to achieve in Thames Valley. It's what i plan on doing next time.

This is where I'm at, there seems to be many more pluses to do it and to not to
