UK Riots: I've been penalised...
Discussion
For being a Londoner.... Thats right. I had no involvement in the riots.
I'm a young man (in the mid 20s) who lives in Tottenham, North London. Thankfully the riots took place far from where I live.
So how have I been penalised. A week or so before all of the madness kicked up I was receiving reasonable car insurance quotes (around 500) decent hot hatch. Needless to say I was rather happy about this. Finally, after many years companies were giving me decent quotes. That moment of Joy didnt last long.
My renewal was produced/generated after the stupid people of this country decided to go on a rampage. Now my renewal quote is no different from what is was last year... To make things more stressful the reasonable quote have doubled with some providers... and almost trebled with others.
Some insurers won’t even quote me online anymore. Quinn Direct LOL, they were my last resort (as I know they've know for insuring so called "high risk" people) even they refused to quote me online. And when I asked why they simply said that I'd need to call them up due to me living within a "High Risk" area. It's almost as if most of London (especially the areas hit by riots) have been black listed. Its beyond a bloody joke.
Some say it wouldn’t be fair to kick the rioting scum out of their council flats..... I say it isnt fair that the law abiding people pay for the consequences!
Not a happy driver!

You realise insurance prices have gone-up across-the-board don't you?
I seriously doubt that the London Riots will have had a significant effect on actuarial data yet - it's possible but I don't think many people are seeing a 'lower' insurance quote this year over last and silly prices are always available as it's the way insurers deter business...
p.s. on the bright side, 16% of the money Govt allocated to fix your area is being given to a football club - that should solve things!?

They have made an effect. Two providers have mentioned the riots.I seriously doubt that the London Riots will have had a significant effect on actuarial data yet - it's possible but I don't think many people are seeing a 'lower' insurance quote this year over last and silly prices are always available as it's the way insurers deter business...

Agreed, I doubt the riots would have had an affect on premiums yet, if at all.I seriously doubt that the London Riots will have had a significant effect on actuarial data yet - it's possible but I don't think many people are seeing a 'lower' insurance quote this year over last and silly prices are always available as it's the way insurers deter business...

Yup - I'm not surprised that insurers boundary conditions (the things they will and will not cover) have changed but the overall spread of premiums is unlikely to be massively different.Even if the riots caused total losses of - say - 50 cars, that's 50 losses spread into data which spans years, in an area where I suspect losses aren't entirely uncommon (any inner city area, basically).
If there'd been a riot in The Cotswolds now, I'd expect actuarial data to have gone nuts - but I'd also expect a few phonecalls would have smoothed it all out again

Anyway - the Govt have said this was a 'one-off' incident and they're always right so who's worried?

Just becuase they say so doesn't mean it's true.
So my premiums have shot up 2/3 fold for no reason?!500 before riots... More than double that after.
Very few people in the call center would be privy to such information.
As Johnpeat said premiums have risen dramatically recently, perhaps the quotes you were given expired and when you did the quotes again it was on new statistics.
I highly doubt the riots would have had an affect on premiums as it's not a long term change in details, the riots were a one off and the amount of cars damaged spread accross the number of insurers that were probably covering the cars is probably minimal, as far as I'm aware we've haven't seen any increase in premiums due to the riots and are unlikly to regardless of what a call center handler thinks.

Betting if you tried to get quotes at the time of the riot, for the riot areas at best you'd be getting a 'refer'. I suspect the memory is still there for companies.
Nope, my money is on a 'management' override function allowing senior managers to effect 'policy decisions' which load premiums for X group available for use in extreme circumstance. Plus you have to factor that the the risk models take a back seat to business policy - there are times when insurance companies just do not want any more of a demographic so spit silly prices out.

Did you get a quote at the end of July for comparison?
As I said quotes before this all kicked off were fine. My current provider gave me an estimated figure of 500... After the riots kicked off it nearly doubled. They even said it was due to the riots.... Not that they needed to explain that to me as it doesnt take a genius to realise this.
