We had 4 tankers stolen from our yard in Ossett on Tuesday night by what appears to be a professional gang.

The gates were cut using an oxyacetylene torch and the security cameras were pushed up in the air.

One tractor unit made 4 trips to collect his prize.

Within the last few weeks, 5 trailers were stolen from a site in Brighouse and a 2 or 3 from a site in Birstall.

This thread will probably disappear into the mire but I thought I could give a heads up to anybody who works in the haulage business to make sure you gates are locked and cameras are rolling.

Do you have any more info on what was stolen from Brighouse and Birstall. Were the theives after the trailers or the contents?

No specifics sorry. I know about the Brighouse ones as they were operated by DHL who run our fleet. The Birstall ones we heard about word of mouth from the company that service our trailer.

3 of ours were found today on a farm in Rothwell, untouched so far.

It seems they are just after the trailers. One of our tanks was loaded, and still is now. Plus, the stuff that is in them is of no use to you unless you run a large carpet manufacturing business!

No idea where the fourth one is yet, hopefully abandoned somewhere and not cut up yet.

Can i ask, due to their worth, is there a reason that trailers don't have some kind of tracking device?

My company has found out to its cost that locked gates and cameras are useless unless you enjoy watching your stuff disappear. What you need is on site security guards.

To be honest, I don't know, although I understand it took a hell of a lot of arguing to persuade the wonderful unions to allow trackers on the tractor units.

Sickening isn't it, watching them 'work'

We saw it from footage on a neighbours CCTV system.

The police told me they raided a unit in Knottingley a few weeks ago, caught the guys red handed chopping up five (I think) tractor units.

The one they used at our place was found with the trailers.

Have there been any caravans going missing (serious question) in the same area?

Seems to be a bit of a regional issue here! Our vehicle maintainer had two of our trailers and an ejector trailer taken from a secure yard weekend of 20th / 21st Aug 11 just outside Leeds. They were all empty having had repairs etc. The suggestion is these groups are knicking them to cut up for scrap!!! A lot of weight in an ejector for example.

We're probably going to hook up C-Locks as a deterant to begin with rather than diving in with expensive trackers..

Oh and beware the dark nights approaching - deisel theft will be on the increase again..! For anyone looking for a deterant www.tissltd.com The more determined scroat will smash through them or I've even seen tanks punctured but these type of devices do stop the opportunist never the less.

As recommended by Brake. I think not then. Shame, as it seems like a good idea, aside from the fact that faced with one, they'll just punch a hole in it.

Not Volvos were they?

We found some plates for a Volvo tractor unit in the storage box on one of our recovered trailers.

Yes, that's us. The nubmer of errors in that article is shocking! Gets the point across though.

We still haven't found the 4th tank. Although, the police 'have a strong suspicion members of the travelling community are involved.'

Oh really!

There is also a spate of exhaust thefts going on - we were done last night and we understand a few others were done in the Dewsbury area - same suspects as previously mentioned - they are not that bright though - no catalytic converters in the systems taken from our trucks - so a lot of work for not a lot - costs us plenty to replace though furious

Lots of Tankers been going missing up north recently.

I work for a manufacturer and a couple of our customers have had Milk Tankers stolen from right under their feet in the past 3 months. They are either being exported to Eastern Europe to be put to use or being chopped up and weighed in.

We also had a call from West Yorkshire's finest last week about the Identity of a Stainless Steel Vacuum tank they found parked in a scrap merchants yard. Found out yesteday it was stolen from the Wakefield area nearly a year ago. God knows why they've been sat on it for so long?
