Is it a Mk 4/5 Cortina MC?

I've looked on the brakeparts.co.uk website and it looks right - its a girling MC with 74660294-3-0302 or could be G3G2 at the end the casting isn't very clear.
Also there is a red cable tie thing around it, on that is
66231 01 38/62 03DT

I'll ring brakeparts tomorrow anyway but just wondered if anyone had been here before.

Its for Dave_M's car biggrin

I would willingly support them if their prices were a bit more realistic, but a cortina MC is £43.79 at brakeparts versus £117.50 at TVRCarparts.

Thats a difference I cannot ignore.

For Info I spoke to brakeparts with all the info off the master cylinder and it is definately a cortina mk4/5 master cylinder. I've ordered one anyway, I'll post here when I've got it fitted & tested.

I had mine refurbed by past parts in BSE....but they cocked it up and i wish i had sourced a replacement instead of going thru the arseache of waiting and re-posting.
I think it was Johnny weggie who recommended a capri 280i unit.
I did not go that route, and maybe it works, so perhaps look into that !!

I've done a bit or research on this.

Its a Cortina 4/5 1.6/2.0 MC

This is also the same as a Capri Mk3 1.3/1.6/2.0/3.0 but NOT the 2.8 - its a different MC.

Brakeparts.co.uk part number is BMC4259 £43.79 plus VAT and delivery

Cast numbers on the side of the Girling MC are 74660294

Hope this helps.

I've just fitted the Landrover MC - it has a 25mm bore which should give a much firmer pedal. I haven't identified the servo on my car as yet although I believe its from a TR6 - the servo element of fitting the Landrover MC is quite important as the servo needs to be big enough to assist the braking. The point I'm aluding to is that the OE Landrover replacement is only £28 - is bigger and better built that the Girling equivalent plus you need to adapt it to push through 3 outlets instead of 2 which can be done very cheaply.

I'll let y'all how it goes once its fully fitted and bled despite it being a promising mod for our Wedge.

I've had a Landrover M/C on mine for a while with a Caprisport adaptor to change it from 2 to 3 port, it's Ok but the pedal is a bit hard. I've considered changing the servo (the standard one is Cortina/Capri 1.6) to a 2.0 Cortina/Capri one which is a bit bigger but it would require cutting of the inner wing area and relocating the throttle cable.

The reason it's a 3-port master cylinder is because the front calipers are fed independently whilst the two rears are fed as a pair. If you re-plumb to a Y-piece from a 2-port (effectively a front-rear split system) then you risk losing both fronts if either springs a leak - a 2-port master cylinder should really be used with a diagonally-split system - which you can't do on a Wedge as the G-valve is single-channel only.

You'll lose both fronts if you get a leak using the 'proper' master cylinder anyway - although there are two unions they both connect to the same hydraulic circuit.

Hmmm... I was thinking the m/cyl had separate 'chambers' feeding the different circuits. Otherwise it rather defeats the object to have multiple outlet ports...

Hi Gavin,
Yes it did work without any problems, it was from a 280i Capri with the internal bore being slightly different as for the code it was exactly the same apart from two numbers that was fitted to the car before. PS - Bought for £35..... and is still working.

jonny.

Just an update on my situation. Past Parts picked up my busted cylinder today. I'm expecting some conflict over the issue as I'm not prepared to pay their nominal fee to have it replaced. In hindsight I wish I bought a direct replacement considering the cost - it doesn't help when the prices charged by TVR type people are stupid hence my reason for going down the refurb route.

As for the landrover MC - I'm dumping that idea as the benefits for TVRs are not known plus there's a need to get a 2.0 servo which cannot be obtained for love nor money.

So it's back to a Corty MK5 BMC....
