Mk6 VW golf 1.4 Match TSI any good?
Discussion
Got a 1.4 TSI but I think its the one down from the Match. Reasonable car, does what you expect of it.
Currently smoking round in a 1.6 TDI Match and again, its an unoffensive car. Love the iPhone link up though!
Probably says a lot that the best thing is the iPhone connectivity actually...

Yes, IMO. Done a smidge under 6k miles in mine since March.
Not going to set the world on fire with performance but quicker than any 1.4 should be. Averages over 40mpg on the Autoroutes cruising at 130kph. Also has one of the best mixes of handling and ride that I've come across to date in a Eurobox. While waiting for it to be delivered I had loans of a Peugeot 309, Kia Ceed, Seat Leon, and both previous and current version of Astra and none of them come close.
Have also got everything in the boot with room to spare for a family of 4 for a week at Disney and another week in Luxembourg.
Has been back once for a new telephone control unit after it stopped connecting over bluetooth.

Had a 1.6tdi Match as a hire car and rather liked it, as someone who doesn't normally find Golfs appealing.
Pretty much ideal spec for a comfy everyday car. Small wheels and big profile tyres mean a great ride, the parking sensors work well, the bluetooth works better than any other system i've used, the leather wheel is nice to hold.
Not planning to change for a while, but rather tempted by one (with DSG) next.

Thanks for the quick replies. I didnt realise it had iphone connectivity that'll be very useful!
VW don't know it does. When my control unit was changed, the service guy insisted I try it before I left. When I got my iPhone out, he said "that won't work"

Yep - either through MDI (cable obviously missing in my hire car), aux socket or, more neatly, can play via Bluetooth. Steering wheel and headunit controls work for track skip, etc too.
Forgot the great touchscreen stereo (which does DAB radio) too.
I connect the phone via bluetooth and have a 16GB USB stick plugged in via the MDI cable which makes the 6-disc CD changer completely obsolete IMO. Mine doesn't do DAB as I opted for the slightly more useful (free) reversing camera.Forgot the great touchscreen stereo (which does DAB radio) too.
Went to look at 1.4 Match for our daughter a few mths ago and was offered 1.4 Twist with the old 1.4 engine for £13K (5dr in metallic). I hummed and harred about it, but the in comparison the price of the Match just seemed insane, and the car will mainly be used for a short commute.
I drive the Twist now and again and it's perfectly OK.

Had one in Spain last year for a couple of weeks - lovely quality car and comfortable and easy to drive but I was however less than impressed by the Tsi engine which I found to sound hideous when cold, was characterless, not very economic and really very gutless - on mountain roads I couldn't use the aircon as the car engine really didn't have the power to cope with the aircon and the steep hills. Now I admit the one I had was brand new with only 1000km on the clock so it was far from run in but I still really thought it was a good car punished with a lousy engine - in a 120ish km run on motorways at around 70-80mph it managed only about 35mpg (and I wasn't being lead footed) reasonable enough, but when you consider my 280bhp t5 Volvo will manage almost that in a similar situation it's not that good. Like I said nice cat but really recommend test driving the Tsi lump before handing over the readies - maybe it's me but I expected the Tsi lump to be an economic, characterful, zingy little motor but it just wasn't

Don't forget it's just a standard exhaust driven turbo with a small petrol engine. So effectively same a typical diesel, but with even less low-end torque. There's no second supercharger in the 122ps engine.Obviously I don't know how you drove it or just how steep the road was, but I'd be a bit amazed if it didn't handle it OK as long as you were in the right gear to keep the revs over, say, 2500RPM, even if that meant going using 1st.
