Why do most people prefer to queue than not use the available lanes to the full extent?

Amd when you do merge at the last possible moment, some people treat you like scum?

They have the idea that you're queue jumping. They have made up rules of etiquette.

They need a few more signs like these:

Or better road markings.

Or better education.

This. I'm glad they do though, it makes it easier for me to get to my destination... past all the sheep looking decidedly stupid. Then the front one always has the grump on because he didn't think of it first rolleyes.

If you use both lanes other people can use either lane. Hey presto! 3 lanes.

Because you are pushing in. You should get in lane in good time, preferably while the traffic is still flowing. Pushing in at the last moment disrupts the traffic flow at the bottleneck, leading to fewer cars getting through and longer queues. In some cases (such as queues at junctions) this can lead to lane 3 of the motorway being disrupted by a queue which should only ever affect lanes 1 and 2. Unfortunately people haring up lane 3 and then having to stop to cut across two lanes of traffic stops lane 3 as well.

I think you know this, the only reason you have asked is because you feel bad and want the other people on here that do the same thing to help you feel that it's OK.
Yep. Let's all queue for a mile, leaving the right lane empty.

And that's an actual distance that I have covered in the empty right lane before merging.

Please make sure you queue up and make life easier for me. I definitely will not be queueing as you suggest.

And then you get the lorry driver straddling both lanes to stop the merge in turn and cause traffic jams, as if they don't cause enough trouble on our roads as it is - morons.

I think these days the majority of drivers are not really interested in cars and driving. Just look at the glum cars on the roads. So they just poodle along following the car in front.

re-read the OP, realised he said 'merging' and deleted.

It works both ways. It's usually those who are blatently queue-jumping yet justify it as making use both lanes that are blocking a lane when they come to a grinding halt at the last second and try to merge, into stationery traffic, causing inconvenience for those using the lane they are in that aren't trying to merge.

Had this on A49 in Warrington. Had a Porsche Cayenne pull out on me to block 2nd lane as I presume he thought I was queue jumping the roadworks. Only I was turning right at the junction before the merge... Didnt stop him using the horn as I skipped round him, only for it to fall silent as I turned right.

I do wish there had been a copper behind me, pulling out into another lane with someone doing 40 would perhaps have warranted a talking to.

If it's 2 lanes merging into one then you should use both lanes up to the merge point - traffic invariably only stops because the lemmings who've been in lane 1 for miles all bunch up to try and stop the folk who are using the road correctly from "jumping the queue."

Or, you have the muppet in the car, deciding that he can fly down a slip road faster than the slow moving nose to tail traffic on an A road, run out of slip road and force his way in front of the lorry, unfortunately (for him), he misjudged it (or didn't care) and forced his way into THE front of the lorry. Moron

And then, after swapping details, proceeded to pull into a gap that wasn't there between two cars! Moron.
