Too expensive to tax?
Discussion
On Facebook I've just seen a friend sold his car today, on the grounds of being too expensive to tax... Got me thinking, would I ever sell a car because of the cost of tax? At this rate, no. VED constitutes 4 fifths of f
k all when it comes to running a car these days so I can't see a reason why I'd want to sell a car because it's too expensive to tax.
So I put it to the PH masses, would you sell a car because it costs too much to tax?

A lot of my colleagues b
h and moan about the cost of road tax. For me, it's a small percentage of my annual car running costs. It's less than a year's insurance, and even the top band is less than 6 weeks fuel for me.
I wouldn't sell a car due to the cost of tax, but would be reluctant to buy a top band car in the first place, due to the poor fuel economy which accompanies the high emissions. 20k a year rules that out!

That's the idea of putting the tax up, it makes people want the cheap to run low emission vehicles.
The silly high tax cars will be interesting in a few years. Ok if you are buying a car brand new you might have a higher disposable income to spend the best part of £500 to tax your £30k car but fast forward to when the car has had a few owners and is worth a couple of grand to spend £500 on tax is probably a lot of money to that owner.

I could definitely see it being an issue for me. I have a 6 mile daily commute and usually drink at the weekends, so I don't use the car enough to justify a massive tax rate.
Thankfully my Integra is PLG or something, so it's £215 odd to tax despite being 2 litres and dirty like your mamma.

£2500 to buy in UK/ Germany
£10 000 once paying all the tax to get it here (and so the second hand market is also worth that).
In addition the calculations are based on weight and kp/ CO2 for the car, so the MX-5 is rather cheap compared to big powerful cars!
