gps lap timer? help!

i recently took a trip to a well known racewear shop and was shown a gps lap timer it was called the qstarz bt-q1000ex has any one had any experience using this? it looks great on paper but i wanted to speak to some one who has actually used it before i buy one. has any one had any problems? has any one been told off for using them at trackdays?
I have the RaceChrono (free) software on my Nokia phone, and an external Q-Starz 5hz GPS sensor. I think you can get their 10Hz version for about £50 now too.
It works very well, and you can even get add an OBD2 bluetooth unit to log rpm, throttle position, etc at the same time. All this can be used in further free software to produce a graphic overlay for your videos.
This could be a cheaper alternative to the dedicated track day package you linked to.
I'm at work at the moment, but I can link an example of my result when I get home so you can see what it looks like.

Melindi, although timing is forbidden, do you have any problem with people using data logging timers such as these? (Assuming they aren't placed so you can see lap times as you are driving round)

Would you be able to expand on this solution; I am looking to record my first lap on Brands and needs something affordable. not looking for HD, but would like to record throttle, GPS position and some 640*480 (ore better) videoIt works very well, and you can even get add an OBD2 bluetooth unit to log rpm, throttle position, etc at the same time. Just to give you an idea, here's a video I did using the Racechrono phone software, and Racechrono2avi graphics generating software. Both of which are free to obtain.
You can create your own 'dashboard' using any pictures you like, position the needles, set their range etc.

(I know the lap is very untidy, especially at 'Oggies'. In my defence, the tyres were on their last legs. In fact, the front left blew later in the day!)

Race Render is little known in the UK, ( http://www.racerender.com/RR2/Features.html ),but if you have an ecu or logger that will output data in .csv format you can create totally custom displays and synch with video as overlays. It's very cheap, works perfectly with my Motec software, and with Race Technology stuff, as well as countless others. The video can be from any source. I used a Go Pro camera, but in hindsight a camera that time stamps the video would make synching child's play. There is a new camera that used the Go Pro engine, but allows separate microphone input, and optional time stamping, plus has a small screen to see what you are recording, and a laser dot for aiming. Bit more expensive, but as I said, in hindsight...
