Hi peeps..The rear thermostat housing arrived today but on closer examination it appears to have damage to the facing edge..Im wondering if this will cause it to leak as it came all the way from germany and it would be a pain to send it back and have to wait for another..Will it leak?..Cheers..Ziga

you could flatten it off, some glass and varying grades of wet and dry and lots of elbow grease.

I'd be doing this. Use something coarse (60 or 80 grit or maybe even emery paper) to start with, it'll rip most of that off in no time. If you bodge it with a filler or sealant you risk it parting company in the future and still having a leak... may as well fix it properly to start with.

You are right ian but i have put it together none the less..The bolts sheared the thread from the new housing..banghead..So i have managed to put two extra long bolts through with nuts and washers on the end..Not sure if it wont leak as it started raining again just as i fitted the pipes to it...I still have a petrol leak as i think its leaking from the banjo fitting and i cant find a 22 or might be a 23mm spanner..Im hoping that once its running the petrol wont leak as much as it will be getting used instead of just sitting there building up pressure..Ive still got this haunting feeling that after all this the radiator will need a recore anyway..Which means a new set of rad hoses top and bottom = £60 and a fitting for the new kenlowe stat control = £33..Then the £130 for the rad recore..Trouble is im skint...So it looks like i might be borrowing my mates vespa..grumpy..Cheers..Ziga

Hi Peeps..Well even though i was careful not to over tighten i still managed to strip the thread on the new thermostat housing..I have used longer bolts and nuts and it has seemed to of done the job..its not leaking!!..The coolant is still being chucked out of the header tank and the bottom hose is staying cold so im now not sure if the new thermostat is opening although the housing either side of the thermostat is rather hot?..Also the bottom of the rad is cool and the top is red hot so im assuming the radiator does need a recore after all...There is flow in the header along with loads of bubbles which i never had before..I flamming well knew it..but as mentioned before it is nearly 30 years old so it could probably do with it..Also the petrol has stopped leaking..(For now)..Cheers..Ziga
