Hi,

I've been offered a 1999 E39 M5. It's done 110k and is Silverstone (blue) with light blue and black two tone leather, Sat nav, etc. The car has full service history and a recent Milltek exhaust system. It's very clean with the odd minor blemish but nothing major for a 12 year old car.

I have had a look through the classifieds but prices range massively.

Would i be getting ripped off at £6000 or there abouts?!!

That would be a fair price buddy. If he still has it try to get the original exhaust too.

I'd agree- sounds reasonable
Especially if expensive service 2 not needed and tyres ok

(A serice 2 and two new back tyres - you're soon into a grand!)

Money well spent mind!

The car has genuine angel eye headlights fitted. The service history is mainly main dealer, then I think a couple of specialists. It has a TV in it, but I couldn't tune any channels. Are these units now useless since TV went digital?

Hi,

Yes, as more of the analogue TV signals are switched off, the analogue tuner in the car becomes more defunct, until after next year it'll be useless.

I'd really not let the lack of TV put you off buying the car, any E39 or indeed any E46/E38/E53. If you miss the TV function, you can opt for the BMW oem hybrid analogue/Digital unit, or the plug'n'play aftermarket solution - both which'll cost around £500-600.

Cheers, Dennis!

Hi Denis,
Nah, I'm not bothered at all about the TV being useless. I was just playing around with it and could not tune anything in. Its a great car though the missus says it looked a bit too showey?!! She thought it was a bit too loud too biggrin

I've just got to decide if it's worth £6k? I am temped thoughyum

Blimey that car is identical spec/colour to mine albeit its got 25k more miles. If that's the ballpark that they're selling for then I can't see myself ever selling mine.

The description on that car says it has a light crease down the passenger side, on the wing, front door and two inches of the rear door. That's maybe why the price is so low.

Don't worry there's an easy six grands worth of metal and leather in the thing anyway.

The car is great value and to be honest for the speed, sound and quality it can't be touched at that price. The running costs eclipse the initial cost anyway

What you have to remember is that whether it is 6k, 5k or whatever it's miles better than a euro-ncap-eco-stopstart-bluemotion-eco stebox.

Buy it and drive it as intended savouring the sound of the v8 as you pile on the speed. The TV is an irrelevance as the back end tries to overtake you!

Get one. Now. Before the Government ban them

Six bags?

On the cusp of suspicion.

Once they get much below this, the venerable stager will enter that notorious realm hitherto exemplified by the sub four bags '34 Fünf which as a very well trodden path, is the stuff of Romany canine sales...

Thus, this is actually about as cheap as punters should want them to get.

Fwiw, a very good chum just handed over nearly twice this amount for one and has just spunked half again in quick succession to re-conjoin with near perfection.

Whichever way you slice it, it sure ain't no Ford when it comes to maintenance.

Then again, the things are so well built that even when a tad under the weather, they can still be enjoyed like few others.

I recall the 'glass half full' psychology of the guy in one of the BMW periodicals who ran a 93 Fünf (yup, a veritable e34 3.8 [yikes central]) and one of his submissions in which he quite openly defined the non-affordability of regular spankage but how one day, 'plonnking in some unidentified oil because it had a picture of a Ferrari on the bottle' (after which it positively flew) restored faith in the battle that ownership often is but justified it, simultaneously.

Just buy the f'cker.

I looked at one very like this (not this one, as the leather was black, not 2-tone) before I bought my facelift car, which was on for 6750, and which drove well but had the odd bit of rust here and there, and the interior was a bit tatty. That seemed correctly priced , so if this one drives nicely and has been well-maintained, then 6k sounds like a good price to me. They are utterly superb cars smile

What is the obsession with facelift cars? I just dont get it.
I'm on my second E39 M5 both pre-facelift cars, they may even have come down the line on the same day as they were registered 3 days apart.
just make sure its a good one, is'nt due an inspection 2 for it's next service and has some life left in the tyres.
The facelift will use less oil apparently, though usage is still variable from car to car. Same engine, same gearbox, same clutchetc etc, as far as I can see you get nicer lights!!! Sod the lights, make sure you get a good sound motor, and be prepared to be well known at your local petrol station.
