For our honeymoon next march my OH and me were going to head out to NZ but with the big day less than 7 months away the £1200+ for flights to NZ just isn't doable anymore so we are looking at other options. These are Cuba, Morocco or Cancun.
Has anyone been to any of them? Not necessarily on a honeymoon but just in general?
I'm keen to hear any stories or places to go and things to see!

Any help much appreciated as always.

What is your budget if NZ is out?

Morocco is very nice and affordable for a very nice standard of accomadation, some of the Riads in Marakech are beautiful and if it appeals do a city a beach stay. It depends what you want and what your interests are, if you want to lie byt he pool all day or beach and not leave your hotel anywhere will do IMO, Cancun is very commercial with some large generic type hotels i,e 100's of rooms, there are quiter places outside of Cancun which are smaller and more suited to honeymooners if you want peice and quiet. If you do't the nightlife in Cancun is lively to say the least.

Cuba you're normally more confined to your hotel with trips out to Havana etc, again allot of large resort hotels with all inclusive. Cancun you have allot to do and see activities wise, and the Mayan ruins if it interests you.

Morrocco is a shorter and cheaper flight so in theory you will have more to spend on accomdation due to cheaper flights. If it were me for a honeymoon I'd go to Morocco.

Cancun isn't the place for a honeymoon. Cuba is nice. Haven't been to Morocco, but the missus keeps blethering on about it. You really have to think about where she wants to go. Morocco then.

Morocco every time.

It's incredibly civilized, people are friendly and polite, food is lovely and even in March it will be hot.

I particularly liked the absence of UK beer-swilling yob culture, although alcohol is widely available in hotels / restaurants.

It may not be on the menu - ask - or just give your liver a break.

With cancun the further out you go on the peninsula the quieter it gets. It has been a long time since I went , 1995.
The hotel we stayed at had a private beach and jaccuzzis on the balcony . We were about an hour out cancun. Nothing to do locally. We went on trips to the Mayan remains , fishing trip and that was it.
If you like meeting the locals etc then it is not for you

Cheers everyone, shall look into morocco a bit more then. Is marakesh the best place to go?
Budget of roughly £1600 for flights and accommodation, could be more or less depending on all inclusive or half board etc.
Willing to listen to other places people would recommend, if you have any.

I must have missed this when walking in and around the souks of Marrakesh. Pretty much everyone is trying to sell you something, pick pocket you or scam cash out of you in some way. Even worse if you're a white western woman. Very hard work imo. Civilised is not the word I'd be using to describe it.

Get out of Marrakesh and I'd say your statement is more accurate. We had a really nice time in Chefchaouen, Fes and especially Meknes. Far less touristy, much nicer interaction with the locals and overall and much more pleasurable time.

When were you there? I didn't find that at all. BTW I am a white western woman. Blonde, too.

For the love of god, stay away from Cancun. It's just a mash of hotels and tourist hot spots.

Go to playa del carmen, with beautiful beaches and a short bus ride to chitzen itza and xel-ha water park, it's probably the most beautiful place i've ever been.

Cuba: the only place I have ever been that serves cold brussels sprouts for breakfast...

Great to look at but not where I would want to go for a honeymoon.

Cancun: maaaahooooosive party central and you will need to get out of town to find somewhere couth and away from braying Brits and Americans.

For a honeymoon, I would be looking towards Morocco....

We did South Africa, flights not too bad price wise. Sun City + Kruger Safari was amazing but wish we had done Capetown also.

Odd choices for a honeymoon destination.

If on a budget, I would look closer to home and effortlessly romantic - Rome, Venice, Paris etc.

Never thought about SA, shall look into that too?
Weird places for a honeymoon? Where did you go? We are just wanting somewhere that will be warm and somewhere we probably wont visit for a few years again yet. Would like to go to the Carribean as well, somewhere we haven't been yet.
Cheers everyone it's providing lots of food for thought!

Regarding SA have a read of this thread
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The good thing is it's pretty much straight down so only a couple of hrs time change (the down side is having to take malaria tablets though!)

Anywhere and everywhere in Marrakech, the souks and around the main square in particular.

Depends of you "do culture" really...

Cuba means you can have an all inclusive, but tag on a few days in Havana to see the real Cuba.

It won't be long before Communism falls and it becomes an extension to Florida Quays - go before it's ruined.

Seriously, depends on the type of Honeymoon you want. If you want 5* all inclusive, then go wherever the f*ck you want to - it won't make a difference (other than possible weather issues). If you want to go somewhere to experience real culture, see a completely different way of life, then do Cuba. Just don't go all inclusive. There are plenty of other trips to Cuba that show you the real Cuba, not just Varadero with a couple of days in Havana. Whilst Havana is AMAZING, the rest of Cuba is equally amazing, and each town you go to offers something different.

As I say, all inclusive? Anywhere in the world. For something different, out of your options, Cuba every time. Especially before the Americans get back there. (Check out other threads on Cuba - lots of ideas of things to do!)

PS - Cold Brussel Sprouts??? For Breakfast????? Really?? I didn't see them once in 20 days, hot, cold, breakfast, or dinner. But then, I actually experienced the real Cuba, not just one hotel.
