No point asking on here, anything that isn't full of watches and "lifestyle" nonsense is considered a chav mag.

It does vary a bit from Chav to a post modern CCC clone, it went more Chav for a while but it was a bit of a self concious effort to put the word fk in the editorial every now and again and include a few 19 year old blonde girls with their boobs out, they did have a few unfortunate things about peoples crashes, some low brow idiots laughing about killing someones dog and stuff like that, put me right off.

Retro Rides is usually worth a read, I cant be doing with swearing and lowest common denominator journalism in Magazines, I dont need boobs and swearing, even Max Power did the odd good articles.

In my opinion, it does tend to be a bit chavvy. I bought an issue a few months back and didn't like to so much.

Saying that, after getting a bit frustrated with Evo of late (a whole other thread, I know), I got my first copy of Octane last night....My word, it makes Evo look like the automotive equivalent of Nuts magzine in comparison.

Octane is a bit elitist I find, kind of a motoring equivalent of an inflight airline magazine, for the gentleman racer and collector, not me.

Evo is ok, a bit cliched sometimes.

I get Autocar, a good balance, Top Gear went crap, not bothered for ages.

Practical classics is ok but can get a bit obsessive about "Trunnions" and Grease Nipples.

Always used to be a Max Power for slightly more grown up people when I wrote for them. I stopped because it wasn't. Any publication that refers to womens breasts as "whammers" deserves to be labled as Chav ste.

Have you tried Practical Performance Car yet?

It's not all "Dub Scene" like Retro. The whole Dub Scene is just Chavs with more money anyway. wink

Agreed, there's an awful lot of that in there. I guess I find it refreshing to see all the beautiful old cars. But yes, I have no interest in seeing the stock of some classic car emporium in California or Belgium.

They rebranded themselves a few years ago and I subscribed for a year. At first, it was modified performance cars, modified for better performance.

Then slowly but surely a lot of misinformation filtered through the magazine, at the same time they were getting a bit too obsessed with power/weight so the magazine was just full of stripped out hot hatches and evos every month.

I wouldn't call it chavvy any more, but by the same merit I wouldn't call it a proper, respectable performance motoring magazine.

I don't think any motoring magazine on the market is "chav" even when MaxPower was still about.

Everyone is into a certain genre of cars which ofcourse will incur views and names from other "groups".

Redline Mag is a very good Modified car mag that is about serious modified cars rather than a 106 with a 100,000 watt sound system ( I realise some may like that sort of thing, Redline does not include such vehicles whereas other mags do).

I used to Read Redline but have since started reading EVO Mag, No particular reason just fancied a change.

Well timed thread.

I picked up a copy on Thursday while in the supermarket and had a brief flick through it. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised to be honest. I was fully expecting to see the usual Max Power-esque rubbish, but it appeared to be more focussed on performance than bodykits, subs and boobs.

Might buy a copy and give it a proper read.

Im not sure chav is the right word, immature is probably better.

However given the OPs choice of picture on their profile, Id say you are a chav!

I used to like reading Red Line back when the guy from Max Power first joined it, had a tuned Nova that wasnt chavvy, cant remember his name. Walsh or Proby something like that.

I like reading PPC now, got given a subscription to Top Gear for Christmas last year and wont be renewing it. Occassionally Ill read Octane and Evo but I think the internet killed most car mags, or seriously hurt them at least.

Was still a shame to see Max Power die though

I always looked at Redline as a grown up MaxPower, it's more about proper modifications; Suspension, tyres, brakes, diffs, turbos, cooling etc.

Max Power isn’t about anymore!? yikes

not read Redline for a long time.

i have Top Gear (xmas subscription gift) and quite enjoy the read.

often buy either Performance Ford, FastFord or Retro Ford . . . . .(yes i quite like the blue ovals, but what gave you that idea)

obviously Retro Ford has a low chav content.

Performance Ford has a few chavy elements to it, but otherwise tries to keep it to engine and chassis mods other than body kits.

FastFord is the most chavy of the 3 i pick up, this months content focuses on a widened wide arch Escort Cosworth and a few super wide fiestas.

Only picked it up as im off on hols and need something to read on the plane, otherwise it would have stayed on the shelf.

Indeed. Simple PH threads like this account of some chap's classic 911 is as good (in text content and quality of photographs) as any professional magazine.

I suspect that few magazines outwith the big sellers (CAR, Evo, TopGear etc.) have a budget (or time) that allows their writers to go on many roadtrips worth writing about, whereas amateur enthusiasts can document their travels on the net through forums like this.

Websites like SpeedHunters seems to cover the modified car scenes on multiple continents more successfully than any print magazine I've seen. Again I suspect they can do it on a smaller budget due to not being obliged to create a set number of pages of contents each issue, they can just create content as it happens (ie. more European events between June-September, more southern hemisphere events during our winter).

I believe Redline is also in danger of being closed due to poor sales.

If you enjoy reading the magazine who care's? If somebody thinks you are a chav because you read it fine they are entitled to their opinion but don't pick and choose what magazine you read because your worried what people will think unless you are trying to impress those people?.I am not a chav but even if i was i would not care,i am a good person anybody that would treat me with less respect because i looked like a chav is ignorant and i couldn't care less what those kind of people think.
