I need an in car camera for mounting on a roll cage; GP Pro HD hero or perhaps, at a lower price point, the Dog Cam bullet cam - both seem to offer VFM for what they are and acceptable (to me) quality.

But, without view finders how on earth do you know these cameras are pointing at the desired target once you've clamped them on the cage? In particular the bullet cam with the narrow angle (68 degree) lens. At les than £100 it could be a bargain but i don't want 20 minutes film of the car's roof.

You can get an attachment for the gopro with a screen on the back.

Even if you do get it set up theres no guarantee its still pointing the right way if you have a coupe and its a pita to get in the back to see it's lined up as i found out with a fiat coupe recently

take a laptop along on the trackday, allows you to quickly see the footage and make adjustments if necessary.

i bought a really cheap (£8 off ebay) mini camcorder, and we stuck it in loads of places - the best turned out to be on the front bumper, about an inch off the floor!

Have you looked an the Contour HD? I used one a few years ago and very good video quality.

The new ones have Bluetooth so that they can be paired up to a smart phone, and then you can get an app that acts as a viewfinder while you set up the camera.

I've got the HD Hero without the rear screen and tbh, I've never had a problem - just attach it, point it in what appears to be the right direction and bingo, 170º lens (@ 960p/30fps, 127º @ 1080p) captures a wide enough viewing angle to accommodate any errors. Well, that's been my experience anyway.
Having said that, I've heard the rear screen attachment (about 100 quid) does make a huge difference to the GoPro's user friendliness (which, it has to be said, isn't wonderful!), so I think that's a no-brainer to buy if you're going to get one - I'll certainly be getting it soon.

The screen does make the Gopro soooo much easier to use. No really to line up the shot. Just to navigate through the menus.
