Goodwood Revival - anyone been before ? bit of advice please

Hi there,

Goodwood Revival is coming up in a couple of weeks. I have never been before although have been to the FOS a few times now.

I have full press accreditation but could do with a couple of questions answering first as its a hell of a drive if I am going to be disappointed.

On the letter I received today it states "the photographers track armband allows access to the area between the spectator fence and the safety tyre barrier". This will be fine and a similar arrangement to most major circuits such as Silverstone I would have thought, however at the bottom of the letter is then states "a maximum of 50 photographers track armbands will be issued and these must be worn at all times by photographers on the trackside"

This seems to say that there can only be 50 photographers working trackside, if this is anything like the FOS then an armband/tabard is near impossible to get and I will probably not be able to get trackside which is the whole point in me going.

Whats it like to photograph at Goodwood circuit, can you get decent shots without going trackside ?
Is the Revival really that good (bearing in mind is a 9/10 hour round trip) ?
Does everyone wear period dress ? will I stand out if in normal jeans and t-shirt ?

Yes you would look out of place in jeans and t-shirt.


It's a VERY crowded event and without access to priviledged areas I would think it would be very difficult to get good shots of track action.
The grass spectator banks behind the low wooden fences on which the public stand (no high catch fencing) mostly slope back away from the fence, so unless you are lucky enough to be standing right by the fence, you will have heads in front of you.

Likewise, if you do have access in front of the fence, you will really pi55 the public behind the fence off, whose hard earned view you have blocked (which could be why there is a 50 arm-band limit?).
To your 9/10 hours round trip, do add a fair time to get in and a LONG time to get out.

It is however a unique and fantastic event.

Firstly, if you stick around the startline and chicane area and you'll get shots like EVERYBODY else. Head up to the Lavant and St Marys corners and you can get some terrific angles and images with even medium lens's. Good for panning on the inside of St Marys. Also, the cars are only a part of it - the surroundings, the people, EVERYTHING is photogenic.

Secondly Revival IS that good. No question, people come from world over for it.

Thirdly, dress up in period gear. Not difficult and will enjoy it more - it's like a giant show and we're all walk on actors. Also, even as press, you should be in period gear to access the Paddock. (But I have seen one or two slip through).

You'll have a blast - hopefully you have accomodation booked??

CivicMan, I took your tip and for the first time walked the entire circuit (in reverse)
and indeed once you get as far away from the start/finish straight as possible, there's very few people there - thanks .

Strangely, I've driven the circuit three times but found that I couldn't always recognise
where I was spectating from, from a driver's perspective (if that makes sense? ).

Yup, great event. Not sure about the "is it worth it" question though - if you had accreditation surely you were shooting for someone?
