Should muscles be symmetrical?
Discussion
Could be a number of things such as a leg length discrepancy (structural or adaptive), past injuries, participation in sports favouring one side of the body e.g. squash with repeated lunging etc... As others have said around 99% of the population are not structurally symmetrical and therefore, nor will their muscle groups be. However, that's not to say it should be immediately self evident that you have obvious differences in muscle size/shape because the differences are usually 'small'.
When you say the right quad has a different muscle structure, in what way?
I was actually just reading some stuff over on the Cyclingnews Fitness blog that brought up a number of interesting things about leg/muscle imbalances. Scroll down to 'Hamstring, Sit bone pain'. There are some other links there too.

Do you mean my left? I'm right footed so it should be the left that's smaller? But I think the muscle starts lower down on my right side...
Regarding your latter point, I kind of agree, but how can one change that? And if all I've been doing is cycling, not squatting or anything what is happening there?

I remember watching a few body building programmes about Arnie & Lou Ferringo way back, a lot of what they were trying to achieve was about symmetry and balance rather than just overall size.
So basically if you want to pose about in some majorly tight speedos with loads of fake tan & olive oil on yourself then go for it and start worrying, if your going for the Olympics next year maybe your coach can put you in contact with a scientist who can analyse what the impacts are of being freak and how many 10ths of a second they can save you round a lap of Richmond Park.
Other than that don't worry, it looks I have two ankles on each foot developed through doing years and years of Breastroke kick as a competitive swimmer and over developing my Extensor Oigitorum. Everyone is different, unless it's causing issues or pain forget it and get on with life.

You can't just swan in with a statement like that and leave! I can't begin to imagine what this looks like! Photos, please?okgo said:

Dude, there's no problem with your legs!! They look fine and I'm sure the girlies would say that you look athletic Regarding your latter point, I kind of agree, but how can one change that? And if all I've been doing is cycling, not squatting or anything what is happening there?
Forget the calves, they are there to stabilise your ankle when you nail down the power. Besides, you don't want them too big cause they'd induce more drag...
