Stripped the racer down to try and find what makes so much noise.

The Wheel bearing was totally shot, we only did about 5 miles with the loose nut, but thought at 1st our problem was the chassis, as it was broken.
so if this has ever happened to you and you have not changed the bearing, I'd give it a good inspection.

It must be that time of the year as my wheel bearings are shot too but not like your mine have just woren out but my hub nuts were split pined in so they would be able to unwind,
I gess they werent quite at the FT torque setting hehe
At least its an easy fix and not the chassis.

We did do them at the right torque with new nylocks, we did not want to pin them as did not want too many holes in the shaft.

I think part of the problem was the washer was very compressed due to being over tightened in the past, and had lost it springiness, going to use a lazer so we can align then hole up and also use lock-tight as that seem to work when we put it back on after coming loose.

Leigh you only need one hole in the shaft to pin them. Mark the end of the shaft where the existing hole is with a parallel hacksaw line. You only need a light mark - i will last for ages. The you can keep drilling through the same hole each time - it doesn't matter if the hub nut gets a few holes. I wouldn't trust the nyloc bit especially in a racing application.

If it ever gets so bad that the stub axle gets knarled you can have the bearing face turned true again quite cheaply, and then add a few shims at the diff end to take up the change in length.

That's quite familiar, I had a loose hub nut on one occasion, it broke the balls in the rear wheel bearings like split peas.

I agree about multiple drilling of the half shafts, although some of the marque 'experts' still carry out the practice, I made these as a simple alternative...

Perhaps this is one of those modifications that should be a must do for all of us..I was going to put it in the BBWF magazine as one of the things to check periodically but maybe it should be a sticky on here as its easily forgotten about until it happens again...Next time someone might not be so lucky...Ziga

They were ones I made some years ago. I no longer have access to the machines required for manufacture.

Should be simple enough: rotary table on a mill.... or you could even file the slots... whistlehehe

You can get the standard nyloc ones from TVRcarParts, I've drilled though all the flats, and then ran a 3mm cutting disc down to the drill holes, to make a castle nut.
